Script:
The Fifth of the Ten Commandments reads: “Honor your daddy and your mother.”
This rule is so essential that it is among the only commandments in the whole Bible that offers a factor for observing it: “That your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is providing you.”
Many people read that part of the Fifth Commandment as a benefit. While it may be concerned as a benefit, the truth stays that it is a reason: If you construct a society in which kids honor their parents, your society will long survive. And the corollary is: A society in which children do not honor their moms and dads is destined self-destruction.
In our time, this connection in between preserving and honoring moms and dads civilization is not commonly recognized. On the contrary, many of the best-educated moms and dads do not believe that their kids require to show them honor, considering that “honoring” suggests an authority figure, which is a status lots of contemporary moms and dads decline. In addition, numerous parents seek to be liked, not honored, by their children. Yet, neither the Ten Commandments nor the Bible elsewhere commands us to enjoy our parents. This is especially striking considered that the Bible commands us to like our next-door neighbor, to enjoy God, and to love the stranger.
It does require that we reveal honor to our moms and dads. There is no one else who the Bible commands us to honor.
So, then, why is honoring parents so crucial? Why does the Ten Commandments think that society could not endure if this commandment were widely violated? One factor is that we, as children, need it. Moms and dads may want to be honored– and they ought to want to be– however kids need to honor moms and dads. A mom and a father who are not honored are essentially adult peers of their kids. They are not moms and dads. No generation knows better than ours the awful repercussions of growing up without a daddy. Fatherless kids are much more most likely to mature and dedicate violent crime, maltreat females, and act out versus society in every other way. Ladies who do not have a dad to honor– and, hopefully, to like too– are more likely to seek the incorrect men and to be promiscuous at an early age.
Second, honoring moms and dads is how almost all of us come to recognize that there is a moral authority above us to whom we are morally liable. It is very difficult to come to honor God without having had a parent, especially a daddy, to honor.
