Are you better than a cat or a dog or, for that matter, a tree?
One of the biggest differences in between Judeo-Christian values and nonreligious worths concerns this very issue: the worth of the human. According to the Judeo-Christian worth system, human beings are infinitely important.
On the other hand, secular humanism decreases the value of the worth of humans. As paradoxical as it may sound, the God-based Judeo-Christian value system renders people infinitely more valuable than any humanistic worth system.
The factor is basic: if there is no God, humans are only material beings– and for that reason unworthy anything beyond the matter of which they are made up. In the Judeo-Christian system human beings are developed in “the image of God,” suggesting that human life is spiritual. Simply put, we are either developed in the image of carbon atoms– and therefore unworthy far more than carbon– or we are developed in the image of God and therefore infinitely valuable.
Our secular, post-Judeo-Christian society has rendered people less significant than at any time in Western history.
The nonreligious denial that human beings are produced in God’s image has led to people increasingly being related with animals. That’s why over the course of 30 years of asking high school and college students if they would initially try to conserve their pet dog or a stranger, two-thirds have actually always voted against the person. If you believe these two examples are either just theoretical (the dog-stranger concern) or severe (the Tucson mom of cats), here’s a problem that is neither theoretical nor severe: More and more people think, as PETA does, that even if it would cause a remedy for cancer or AIDS, it would be incorrect to experiment on animals. Lots of animal rights advocates believe that even to save a human life, it would be wrong to eliminate a pig to acquire a heart valve.
