The national anthem means freedom– even the flexibility to do silly things … like protesting the nationwide anthem.
But, like my mother always said, even if you are free to do the wrong thing, it doesn’t indicate that you should.
Beginning in 2016, some expert football players have refused to stand when the nationwide anthem is played before a game. A few of them kneel, some of them sit on the bench, a few of them raise their fist, and some don’t even come out of the locker room.
This was all begun by San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick. His idea was to object the alleged mistreatment of black people by cops– and by America in general.
As he put it, “I am not going to withstand show pride in a flag for a nation that oppresses black individuals and individuals of color.”
Kaepernick no longer plays in the league since, obviously, NFL owners are racist versus backup quarterbacks who do not toss well. His protest lives on and has actually spread out to college and high school professional athletes. Even primary school kids have actually gotten into the act.
I like football, and I sing the anthem openly at events. And second, even if it were true, the demonstration is misdirected and self-defeating.
Let’s start with issue one.
Despite what we’re informed by Black Lives Matter and their media allies, the authorities are not engaged in a collaborated project to ruin the black race.
As Harvard Professor Roland Fryer– who happens to be black– and others have actually shown, there is no proof of racial bias in authorities shootings. In any case, the thing that makes headings– police shootings of unarmed black males– is very rare.
So, if authorities are trying to persecute black folks, they’re doing a truly bad job.
Am I stating racism does not exist? Of course not.
Am I stating racist cops don’t exist? Of course not.
I would state this: Blacks have a lot more to fear from black criminals than from the authorities. The authorities keep us safe.
Now, problem 2:
The protest is misdirected and self-defeating.
The national anthem and the american flag are signs that represent our nation. Even if some law enforcement officer are racist jerks, it doesn’t make good sense to object those particular jerks by demonstrating versus the country as a whole.
He never denigrated the flag or the anthem. He argued that the individuals who oppress blacks are the ones denigrating the flag and what it stands for.
