Let Kids Be Kids | 5 Minute Video
Lenore Skenazy, President of Let Grow, encourages parents to do what parents have always done: follow basic safety rules, and then let their kids be kids.

Summer—glorious summer!
Time to dig in the sand, gulp from the hose, play at the park, and leap with joy! Unless you’re a kid—in which case, find yourself a comfy sofa in a dark, quiet room and settle in.
This is the season your parents are bombarded with the kind of warnings previously associated with incoming torpedoes.
The basic message: Don’t have fun—it’s too dangerous.
“Remember when digging in the sand at the beach was a fun activity for young children?” asks the website KidsTravelDoc. “Sorry. No more. Based on recent findings, only with lots of do’s and don’ts is frolicking in the sand a healthy activity.”
The blog’s author, Karl Neumann of the American Academy of Pediatrics, lays out his own don’ts: “Studies show that children playing in the sand are more likely to become ill than children merely walking on it. And the risk of illness increases with digging in the sand, being ‘buried’ in it, and digging in wet sand.”
Got it. Keep your kids on dry sand. No, wait—“Dry sand presents problems, too.” So, Dr. Neumann warns: “Discourage children from lying directly on the sand.”
While you’re at it, “Walking barefooted is another ‘don’t.’ Have children wear lightweight, ventilated, hard-soled footwear that covers the toes. This helps prevent stubbed toes, lacerations, puncture wounds, and burns from hot sand. Ideally, footwear should be worn for wading in the water.”
In fact, why take your kids to the beach at all? Better to keep them at home on a hard, nonporous surface, free of dirt and obstacles, checking frequently for venomous spiders, disease-bearing insects, and sewage. Children should also be in steel-toed work boots. Come to think of it, chain-mail wouldn’t be a bad idea.
But even that isn’t enough. Simply keeping the kids at home doesn’t ensure they’re safe either, especially if they make it into the backyard. Parents Magazine warns that “bees are attracted to flowers, so don’t put fragrances or floral-patterned clothing on kids.” Surely, you’ve seen swarms of bees chasing children in floral prints.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that if your moppets still insist on playing outside, the little daredevils at least should “limit sun exposure during peak intensity hours—between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.” That shouldn’t put a crimp in anyone’s day, should it?

Why is nobody talking about the clock that loos like it says the day has 12 hours…
It is good for children to be around danger so they can learn how to be safe on their own
Back in the day kids used to be allowed to play on playgrounds with like Tires, Metal, Power Tools and they could build things.
only prager u video i agree with
I let my kids get sick when they turned a year old. They now are in school and don’t really get sick.
That's why we created Leo & Layla History Adventures.
Yes. Let children be children.
Ok so the parenting magazines aren't always accurate or true they're just plain wrong and can scare the pants out of them. But even if they were bending the truth a little it can cause serious trouble. Luckily for us parents can't believe everything they read online that isn't true they should be careful about where to get advice and information so we don't make the same mistakes and let kids have fun.
Aged way to perfectly now
We wonder why a good number of children today are allergic to everything. Maybe because they haven’t been exposed to the natural world and all of its wonders. No wonder “snowflakes” are everywhere.
Wow… DemocRATS didn't know about our immune systems before Covid too apparently.
I love how boomers will be all like, when I was your age I did this and that. While being completely oblivious to how they ruined the economy and climate with their selfishness
Turning kids into fradie cats let kids play and stop bieng mother Hens
Boy these over protective type would have had a stroke if they saw my childhood. I grew up on a dairy farm so I was constantly exposed to cow poo.
We live in a safetist society.
LOL it’s taken just 8 seconds for the child to be exposed to lead poisoning because the parents let them drink from a hose… great advice prager U, I assume the ‘U’ stands for ‘Uneducated’?
3:52 And no mention that if one lets the hot water in the hose run out for a few seconds until cooler water replaces it, then the water that just filled the hose has had hardly any time to have vinyl chemicals leech into it.
@school wants to know your location👹
Our kids are getting sicker and sicker since they aren't exposed to the outdoors. Doctors and big pharma are making more money off sick kids. The govt and media are controlling us to be zombies to AI/robots.
Nature is healing/grounding. Kids need the outdoors. Yes there are safety precautions to watch for but how do we teach our kids about precautions if we don't give them situations to practice these?
Don’t care, sandcastle time.
Conservatives: Let kids be kids!!!
Also conservatives: Joey wearing a dress is inherently sexual and socialist.
Poor gen alpha
I played with spiders, ate sand, created designs with grass mold and stared at the sun throughout my childhood. I'm healthier than the vaxxed.
WiFi on everything = more cancer.
AMEN!
This stuff doesn't happen. And studies like these are important for health knowledge but they don't immediately suggest you should keep your children in hazmat suits. And half of this stuff is being reacted to quite heavily, I don't understand the sensitivity. But it is all about moderation, so I would love to hear respectful opinions.
when i was a kid parents kicked us out of the house each day. go to the pool (mile walk or bike ride away) go to park (half mile), go to school playground, (half mile), go play in creek down street, go ride bikes around town, go play in woods, run on the trails by the river. the lake just outside town had 3 summer camps and swimming area in it. Trails around we road bikes on. we would be out till street lights came on and as teens till midnight in summer. guess what i never get sick, i never get flu shots, poison ivy barely affects me, couple small bumps is all and wild animals arent afraid of me and walk up to me.
im 40s now and still climbing trees and running around barefoot
The generation that protested anyone over 30 because communists useful idiots than more authoritarian than their parents. Dr Benjamin Spock poisoned the minds of a whole generation.
Wow. It's a wonder how anyone survived before these discoveries were made. I guess kids had to have a lot more common sense.
