Involvement trophies.
I’m not a fan.
They’re bad for kids. Bad for mother and fathers. Bad for society.
Aside from that, they’re alright.
If there was a sport to be played, I played it. And never when did anyone ever notify me that winning was not important or that appearing was all that mattered.
Today, kids get a different message. What a terrible thing to tell a kid. If they had, I’m sure I never ever would’ve become a professional soccer player.
Let me inform you why.
In high school, I was a terrific soccer gamer. I believed I might play soccer in college. Recalling, however, I just wasn’t enough in those college coaches eyes.
I checked out for the UCLA group as a walk-on. I made it! I was vindicated. I had actually arrived … on the bench. The coach hardly ever took a look at me. I’m not even sure he knew my name. I comprehend he didn’t appreciate my sensations. I wished to be a starter, I wished to be a winner. Should not I have been pleased merely for making the group? Of course not. That’s absurd.
Nevertheless isn’t that what kids are informed today? You’re a winner. If you’re not, even. If you can be found in last, even. And we’ll provide you a reward … simply for showing up, merely for taking part.
This belief– that appearing is an achievement– is self-destructive. Since the pain of losing becomes part of what drives one to enhance.
The aggravation of going to video game after video game and resting on the bench drove me nuts. I required to work more difficult.
This taught me an important lesson: If you do not put in the work, you will not get ahead. And not getting ahead? Well, that feels awful. Put in the work. Or go home.
I put in the work. I pushed myself, not to do my finest– since who can potentially know what “their finest” is?
Coach put me in the video game. Not due to the truth that I wanted so seriously to play, however since he needed me. I played well.
The road to victory– in sports, in company, in life– is paved with losses, unpleasant losses. Losses that can harm so much it’s tough to breathe. Any professional athlete or reliable business owner will inform you that’s real.
