How would I do that?
Well, what if I said, “If you don’t pay, you lose your job.”
For years, numerous state and city government staff members– police, firemens, teachers, and others– have really been required to make that option.
And who forces them?
Public-sector unions; that is, unions who represent public-sector workers.
How? It’s pretty simple.
They require workers pay hundreds of dollars in union costs as a condition of work– meaning if they do not pay, they get fired. Or the taxpayer who has to foot the expenditure for those union contracts.
This strategy is not a secret. Here’s what the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees say on their site: “We elect our supervisors, so we’ve got to elect politicians who support us and hold those politicians accountable.”
These perverse incentives may assist explain why, for the majority of American history, generally no one thought that unionizing federal government employees was a terrific principle.
This includes liberal icon President Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt was a really strong advocate of private-sector unions, however a really strong challenger of public-sector unions.
