Q&A #15 – Why is it important to refrain from sarcastic speech?
Pastor Jack Hibbs answers questions regarding the Christian’s speech. Here are the questions:
1) How can we determine what intentional evil speech is versus casually talking about a situation?
2) What does the Bible say about sarcastic speech?
3) What are some practical ways we can tame our tongue?

Always good to hear from you jack, god bless
Great questions addressing speech something we all struggle with. Love you Pastor Jack.
Sarcasm, as Paul used it "The right way" is impossible. It is impossible to know whether or not any groups will be effected by it. Paul used it to make a point, ok, great. But, no one can always know whether or not such sarcasm will have an effect on anyone. You just can't know everything. In fact, no speech has a knowable outcome. This is in relation to the butterfly effect, and as such, a world full of minute decisions that have spiraling outcomes are NOT a place where a god can intervene, lest it risk counteracting the freedom of choice.
Sarcasm in Greek means "Tearing of Flesh". In my youth to late 30's I was a very sarcastic person. When I learned this definition…I stopped immediately…and the Holy Spirit helped retrain my speech to eliminate. I was horrified by this revelation because I thought I was so clever and funny. But Never again.
What would Jesus say and do, go and do likewise.. watchmen must speak out
Thanks Pastor Jack. You’re so right, when I hear myself say the wrong thing, I am pretty much immediately made aware!
It's great that people are asking these questions, tells me they want to learn.
Sarcasm is a huge problem I have! I pray Jesus helps me be less so. Holy Spirit has been speaking to my heart about it. I don't talk bad about people, but I do get snyde about their words. Not good!
Thank You Sir, these minute bites provide clarity to us. We must have clarity in our every day dealings to be successful.
I think it depends all on how you use “sarcasm,” everyone has their own “conviction “ , I think it’s used in humor and can be hilarious, my friends and I play around but we never hurt one another.
Pray for me I think I'm to critical
🙂
I have read parts in the letters that the apostle Paul said that was not gossip or evil but sarcastic….he was as you said…and he was good at it!
James 3:8
Sarcasm has been used by the greatest preachers, missionaries and soul winners in the past and present. Even Jesus used sarcasm
