Incoherent babbling is a psychological, therapeutic stress reliever practiced by people of many different religions. There's nothing distinctively "Christian" about it. Just like having a good laugh or a good cry or a good shout relieves stress and makes you feel better, so letting yourself go and making random noises makes people feel good. That it's misinterpreted to be a spiritual experience is a pity, since it has no relationship to the "gift of tongues" described in Scripture. I can believe that many are greatly benefited by this activity, since it has great therapeutic value. But it's not speaking in tongues.

Philip Bramblet - posted on July 18, 2019 7:33 pm

According to the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14, the gift of tongues was a fulfillment of Isaiah 28. That is, it was a sign of judgment on unbelieving Israel. That judgment came in AD 70 when the temple was destroyed by the Romans, never to be rebuilt to this day. Judgment fulfilled. Sign fulfilled. No more need for tongues. It faded away. God can still give it if he wants, of course, but very few modern manifestations match the biblical description.

What man miss but is of great importance is Apostle Paul quoting a verse from Isaiah concerning speaking in tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:21 KJVS
[21] In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
Now to read the pertinent verses in Isaiah.
Isaiah 28:9,11-13 KJVS
[9] Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. [11] For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. [12] To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. [13] But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
Isa 28:9 brings verses from the book of Hebrews to mind.
Hebrews 5:12-14 KJVS
[12] For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. [13] For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. [14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Well one thing’s for sure; it does NOT involve rolling around on the floor, giggling like a demented hyena, speaking in incomprehensible dialects. That’s nothing but charismatic chaos and we can all guess whose spirit is really deceiving these people ?

Send $300. I'll teach you how to speak in tongues, or you can put a bunch of Tabasco sauce on your tongue for free lol. People are so gullible it's the 21st century and there still believing this crap. Religion was made to control people and to scare them into submission. Romans made up christianity, so they would control the Jews and non-Jewish. That's one reason the bible was written in Greek duh not the fictional character jesus's language
Aramaic. The Roman family the Flavians made up jesus. Titus Flavius was jesus. That's is why the dead sea scrolls are so different than the gospels (roman topology). The is no written proof of jesus in history, sorry do some real research. A lot of the stories in bible come from the old sumerian culture , yeah even the great flood all made up and moses.

Amen, I'm fully with you there. Its biblical, but not for everyone. It makes sence if its to bring the gospel to foreign people. And maybe it is really a language of angels, but I experienced the same as John, I felt it was made up and God saying no to me.

M. Rizzy - posted on August 15, 2019 11:09 pm

I think there are a lot of people here that share a similar experience with tongues as John's. I used to be part of that movement but what troubled me was the non biblical practices of many with the gifts. Just like John here I believe the gifts haven't ceased but much of what we see in churches who practice them are bordering on being just a circus act.

So two types of speaking in tongues… yet most people gravitate towards the one that is easy to fake, which is the sort of babal utterance. I think a greater example or proof would be an unknown earthly language especially since the individual is in control of the gift

A language that you dont need to learn because its a gift from the Holy Spirit.

Signs and wonder follow those who believe.
They will cast out demons
they will speak in new to tongues
They will pick up snake with their hand and when they drink poison it will not hurt them at all.

And that is the wonders to THOSE WHO BELIEVE.
Ask and you will recieve.

Genesis 11:5-7 …..'And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.'

i think the bible talks more about some being gifted with the tongue, being charismatic and maybe speaking other languages, skills that can contribute on spreading the message – and people horribly got that too literal and babble all along.

Neo Genesis - posted on August 30, 2019 7:13 pm

The tongues are for today. Do not let ANYONE tell tly different. When you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, you WILL speak in tongues.
Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ For the Remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
Everyone who is baptized in the name of Jesus Christ SHALL receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. No exceptions. Every single apostle spoke in tongues, and when the apostles preached they preached repentance and baptism for remission of sins and the PROMISE of receiving the Holy Ghost

If you don’t understand what you said even to God, how can you said amen to that? If you speak a tongue that you understand, then you can be edify! You, and others, Besides the Bible says in Romans 8:26

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

So, the Spirit is helping us to pray, we don’t need a special unknown language to pray to God, because God understands all languages, what we need is a deep intercession by the Holy Spirit to help us express our heart better! And the Spirit does that by WORDLESS groans!

God is not a God of confusion!

I appreciate his ignorance and honesty and enjoy his heart and sermons however on this subject he is still learning as it is not for believers- Acts 4 is clear that tongues is for the UNBELIEVER NOT THE BELIEVER and that is why those men were speaking languages which enabled them to PREACH THE GOSPEL. (and convert unbelievers to Christ) Paul said IF I spoke with the tongues of angels – he didn’t say its a tongue of angels- his whole point and the entire ACTS explanation is that and I quote “how is it that we hear it in OUR OWN LANGUAGES” men from (and it names the territory’s) . They had just been commissioned to spread the GOSPEL TO GENTILE THE WORLD!!! It even lists THE LANGUAGES OF THISE TONGUES.

But what about the part where Paul is talking about INSIDE the church- well UNBELIEVER S WERE COMING INTO THE CHURCH and people were being prophesied to and hearing Gods Word in their own language (repent and turn from sun and accept Christ and God would give then the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their CARNAL NATURE! Read 1John! But then it was mis-used and Paul explains it CLEARLY . When you are zealous- speak to yourself meaning STOP THIS! You mean well but you don’t understand! Prophesy IS the gift of tongues – Jesus is the Spirit of PROPHECY! Preaching Jesus is what its ALL ABOUT! Thats BIBLICAL! Prophets are those that talk about his coming, his forgiveness, HIS JUDGEMENT ! God bless you! God bless John Piper for at least being honest!!!

All gifts are for today as can be seen in places that spread the Gospel and people hear it in their own language.

Biblical scholars, who are actually capable of translating Koine Greek (the language from which the relevant passages were translated), understand that the term γλῶσσα, ης, ἡ, appearing as “tongues” in early Bible translations by Jerome, et al, actually means “languages.”

This whole debate centered upon whether the practice of glossolalia, uttering guttural gibberish meant to be “the language of angels,” is consequently a moot point. At the Pentecost, the Bible makes it perfectly clear that the tongues spoken were simply the native languages of foreigners gathered at the event. Even today, though I can speak, read, and write Spanish, for example, it is commonly understood by everyone what I mean when I say English is my “mother tongue.” Ask those pretending to speak the language of angels this: why, pray tell, would the God who gifted us with His Son who very clearly spoke in easily-understood words, have His holy angels deliver secret messages (no two of which, incidentally, are ever alike) that only one other person could pretend (and pretending is precisely what’s happening) to understand?

The occultist John Dee, astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, and his cohort Edward Kelly, claimed to have received secret writings and messages from angels. They were vilified for promoting dark magic, and each met with a very unpleasant end, having once been quite prosperous. Kelly even claimed, at one point, that these supposed holy angels had told him that he and Dee should have sex with one-another’s wives. Whether the two actually received a “supernatural” communication from incarnate beings doesn’t matter, what they were doing is very much akin to what “tongue” speakers are doing today. If you feel that God is leading you in a language you don’t understand in private prayer, whether it’s actually happening or not, that’s an entirely different matter from seeking self-glorification to prove your own holiness in a crowded congregation, even one where such false “gifts” are taught.

Remember what Jesus Himself said in Matthew 6:5-6 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Dangerous is he who did not draw a clear line against gibberish tongue speaking. It is the embryonic stage of departing from the faith. Smaller group with “interpretation” should be acceptable. I see the falling away is coming.

There is praying/speaking in tongues and prophesying in tongues. According to the Bible Praying or speaking in tongues can be done in church by those who can, because they communicate with God and they edifying themselves. But prophesying in tongues is what should not be done if there is no one to translate it, because it means it is a message to the church so there must be a translation for the message to reach the congregation
