You need to understand that God does NOT need your kindness. He can accomplish His Will through other people, the real question is, do you want to be part of the action or just watch from the stands. When you give of your (money, time, skills etc ) you grow in the Spirit because you're letting lose of the things that once controlled you. We have to remember, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. What are we trusting the most? our bank account? comfort? Jesus?

I'm over here driving, trying not to jump out the seat ! This teaching truly expressed my heart. I was just debating with other Christians about this yesterday. No one could really give me a reasonable explanation of, why we should pay tithes. Some even said it shows obedience, faith, blah blah. So bless u for this revelation. God bless this ministry ??????

Tithing is not for today. Show me where Jesus said we should live under the OT laws and do tithing, show me where Jesus did tithing, show me where the apostles did tithing, you can't find it in the NT. I didn't say we shall not give offering to support our church and help people in needs, I'm talking about tithing is not for today. God bless.

Tithing was a choice. God never asked for 10 percent. God owns everything. We really cant give him anything. Tithing is how todays pastors get rich. Today pastors act like tithing is a must.

Ken Darnell - posted on June 16, 2019 8:12 am

I have friends that believe tithing is a part of the Old Testament Covenant, but tithing preceded the law (Genesis 14:17-20). They site 2 Corinthians 9:7 as an argument against tithing – every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. What most fail to realize is this scripture has nothing to do with tithing. It is about helping other saints. Paul starts the chapter by proclaiming his confidence that the Corinthians will help other believers. “1 For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you: 12 For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many. Can it be any more clear? We are to help our brothers and sisters in Christ, but let us do it, not begrudgingly, but of a cheerful heart. It’s yet another example of the enemy twisting the truth as he did in the garden.
As much as I’m distressed by this misinterpretation of the word, I’m also concerned about those who believe they can tithe 11, 15, or 20 percent. It represents a subtle drifting into works that denies the truth of God. Less we forget, his word is settled in heaven (Psalms 119:89) Saul is a great example. God commands Saul to destroy the Amalekites for their disdain of Israel as they were leaving Egypt (Genesis 15:3). But what does Saul do. “Saul and his army let Agag live, and they also spared the best sheep and cattle (1 Samuel 15:9) The sheep and cattle, as the verse clearly states, were the best of the flock and would make an excellent offering to God. “But I did listen to the LORD!” Saul answered. “He sent me on a mission, and I went. I captured King Agag and destroyed his nation. 21 All the animals were going to be destroyed[e] anyway. That’s why the army brought the best sheep and cattle to Gilgal as sacrifices to the LORD your God.” (1 Samuel 15: 20-21) Like Saul, most believe they can bring God something better than what he requires, but they error. They can do God a favor. Like Saul, a good offering is the wrong offering when it’s not what God says he wants. For this reason, we know that obedience is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22) And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. God only delights in what He said. Bring God what He wants and He will be pleased. Did we not learn as much from Cain?

The 11, 15, 20 percent tithes teaches us that our works, our offering, is better than what God says he wants – 10 percent. Anything more than 10% is simply an offering. If we are not careful, we lead the congregation to value their relationship based on who “tithed” the most. This is a dangerous lie from the enemy. Jesus is out tithe to eternal life. Jesus is what God wanted. Anything more is works. Bring our 11, 12, and 20 percent tithes all we want, but it will not give us salvation.

My wife loves a Pepsi with peanuts in the bottle and once wanted me to buy her a Pepsi and peanuts. Since Coke, in the minds of many, is a better product than Pepsi, I purchased a Coke and peanuts. I gleefully returned to the car with the Coke and peanuts. In my mind, I went above what was required. To my surprise, my wife was furious. She hates Coke and would not drink it. It was not what she “said” she wanted. Why should God be any different? We often forget that the forbidden tree was one of the knowledge of good and evil. The good things we do, if they are what God requires, will lead to death (Genesis 2:16-17)

Pablo Remonsellez - posted on June 16, 2019 4:45 pm

Thanks Pastor John. The "obligation" of the OT tithe has been replaced in the NT for the "joy" of cheerful giving.

Anthony Johnson - posted on June 17, 2019 5:41 pm

Giving is in the new testament. But not giving tithes. There is no way you will convince a pastor he or she that collects tithes that it is not in the new testament even if he or she does see the scripture to prove it to themselves.
Just be honest tell your people it not there scripturally but tell the congregation that you still practice this Mosaic custom…As way to support your church needs. Stop lying and assuming on GOD AND CHRIST.

firstbornjordan - posted on June 26, 2019 2:44 pm

Best 7 minute message on tithing. I spoke on giving once in 29 years (never on tithing). The outcome was that "tithes" reduced but the missions giving went up. All because I shared a revelation about a parable and told people that I had been giving to a missionary for over 20 years. Strangely, the leaders were happy with what I said because they thought I was supporting one of their financial agendas to invest money (I actually said to invest in the Gospel) and the people head different (give to where the Gospel is being preached. Many came up to me after my main sermon and said, thank you, I now know where to give, even months later! The pastor resigned within months.

We give out of the abundance of the riches that we possess and that is more than about money; it's about hospitality, compassion, Gospel centred living and serving the Lord. Many people are just not able to give in low socio economic circumstances but they should experience the freedom and blessing of giving – a natural response for the blessings we have received.

Ps John said, many books been written on tithing. However, I would venture to say that not one Bible College has ever made tithing a unit of study. Why? Because the application of sound hermeneutics would immediately expose the teaching as false in the New Covenant. You cannot justify tithing today if you rightly divide the word. Giving extends beyond the monetary to the heart issue – some perfectly calculate just how much mint, dill, and cummin to give, but neglect the weightier matters of the "law", justice, mercy and faithfulness. This was Jesus transitioning the pharisees to begin understanding that giving extends beyond a regulatory exercise, and encapsulates a life that is united with Christ, setting the captives free – a life that understands the true Gospel.

Andrea Michelle - posted on June 28, 2019 11:54 pm

Tithings is a false teaching. I have studied every scripture that people use to justify tithings. If you want to be obedient to God, support those who are serving, help the poor, visit the sick. Do what matters to God.

Tevin Mitchell - posted on July 12, 2019 6:33 pm

I don’t tithe anymore, God doesn’t need our money but would rather us give. Most Christians go by Old Testament laws that has been fulfilled after Christ resurrection. I give more than I tithe.

Come on piper, I really love your ministry brother…………..It is no commanded or required to tithe…………………….Malachi is not applied under the New Covenant…………………….You know that the law is not of Faith. Jesus has commanded that those who preach the gospel can live from the gospel they preach, no issue on that. Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, so as the heart of the individual is given over to God will be to the degree and or amount they give. Tithing according to Malachi is a an act of falling from grace…………..you know that as well.

cortez bailey - posted on July 18, 2019 1:02 pm

So you say give more that a tenth of your cash is implied here……………scripture says present your body as a living sacrifice, so how much more that ten percent of my income? Come on piper should a believer tithe according to malachi or Not? Abraham gave a tithe, why don't you teach from whats known as the father of faith tithing………………….I know you know this…………..Tithing does not fit in at all…………..Jesus has commanded that those who preach the gospel can live from the gospel they preach, each individual as they purpose in there heart to give let them give

Brandon Ross - posted on August 17, 2019 1:32 am

That's a good message, but it still leaves ALOT of questions unanswered? Since the curse of the law is gone for those in Christ, redeemed by faith alone in grace alone by Christ alone. Is God going to punish those who give less than the 10%. Some would say that God's going to take it out in Dr. bills or some nonsense like that. So the blessings of giving remain, but the curse for not giving was taken to the cross. I believe in giving to God and His work. I have benefited from the generosity of God's people when I served as a pastor. I have also given to support pastors. It's just crazy how there can be so many views from godly people on both sides. I want to be spot on when it comes to this issue. The New Testament doesn't seem to put much emphasis on the tithe at all, mainly of free will giving as the Spirit leads. But many pastors beat the tithing drum because they have to keep the machine running. Many people must feel condemned when they can't check their tithing box. This is my concern on how this is being taught. It's either grace or law, no middle ground.

SO PASTOR JOHN PIPER, HAVE YOU BEEN FOOLING THE PEOPLE FOR 33 YEARS BY
YOUR TEACHING?
DID PAUL SAY IN 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 THAT THE CHRISTIANS SHOULD GIVE TO THEIR
PASTOR OR TO THE POOR CHRISTIANS?
2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 (KJV)
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
NOTE :
IN VERSE 12 PAUL SAID: For the administration of this service '''''NOT ONLY SUPPLIETH
THE WANT OF THE SAINTS''''', but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;

PAUL NEVER TEACH THAT THE PASTOR SHOULD BE PAID BECAUSE HE HIMSELF
DID NOT WANT TO BE PAID…
FOR IN 1ST CORINTHIANS 9:18 HE SAID: What is my reward then? Verily that, when I
preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ '''''WITHOUT CHARGE''''', that I abuse
not my power in the gospel.

THERE IS NO COMMANDMENT OF GOD THAT THE PASTORS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
MUST BE PAID…. MUCH WORSE , TO PAY THEM BETTER THAN WHAT THE LEVITES
WERE BEING PAID IN THE OLD TESTAMENT……

Pastor John Piper, You are teaching three(3) evil doctrines….
NAMELY : TRINITY, CALVINISM, AND PAYING TO THE PASTORS….

IF I WERE YOU , YOU SHOULD REPENT FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR OWN SOUL….
GOD DID NOT PREDESTINED YOU TO FOOL PEOPLE…..
