What is the world’s most dangerous ideology?
In the first part of the 20th century, the answer was Fascism; first manifest in Italy in the 1920’s, and then in Nazi Germany and in Imperial Japan. It took a world war and 50 million dead to mark it out.
In the second half of the 20th century, the response was Communism. In Between the Soviet Union, Mao’s China and their customer states, at least 100 million people were eliminated in its wake.
Today, the answer is Islamism, a radical, and typically violent, form of Islam.
Like Fascism and Communism, Islamism is totalitarian in nature: the state manages whatever. And, like Fascism and communism, many of Islamism’s followers are prepared to kill to achieve its aims.
Those goals are antithetical to everything Western and other totally free societies represent: complimentary speech, capitalism, flexibility to practice, or not to practice, any religious beliefs, flexibility of assembly, a complimentary press and, obviously, essential human and civil liberties for all their residents.
Islamism completely rejects the Western principle of separating religion from federal government. In its view, governments are genuine only if they rule according to spiritual law– in Islamism’s case, Sharia, Islam’s extensive body of sacred laws.
Sharia is based upon the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah. The Quran is believed to be the actual words of Allah, as revealed to his prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. And the Sunna includes the deeds and words credited to Muhammad.
Islamists translate Sharia to hold that anyone born Muslim should stay Muslim and face execution if they convert to any another religion; that adulterers need to be stoned to death; that anyone who insults Islam or Mohammed need to either be significantly whipped or performed, and that thieves must have a limb cut off. In addition, Islamists excuse polygamy and child-marriage.
These beliefs are being implemented right now in, among other places, Iran, the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the Muslim parts of Nigeria, parts of Pakistan Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan– and any place else Sharia has developed a foothold.
If Islamists were content to live under rigorous Sharia law in their own neighborhoods and leave everybody who does not wish to live that method alone, they wouldn’t be a risk to the rest of the world. That would not be Islamism.
Islamism desires the whole world governed by Sharia. And anybody who opposes Islamist expansionism is the enemy and must be destroyed. That, of course, consists of the United States, all of Europe and Israel. However it also includes fellow Muslims. Certainly, Islamists have actually killed much more Muslims than members of any other group.
So, how many Islamists exist? Nobody knows for sure. However we can make some conservative calculations. There are roughly one and a half billion Muslims on the planet. The number of these are Islamists?
