The 1917 Russian Revolution changed the course of the 20th century. At its head stood Vladimir Lenin, a man who used terror and mass murder to realize his Marxist vision of a utopian society. How did he and a small band of communists overthrow an empire and create the first totalitarian state? Paul Kengor explains.

  1. The only monster I see here is 'Paul Kengor professor'. You are monstrous propagandist scumbаg.
    Simple things:
    – Try again and draw a correct USSR map
    – Try again and corrctly name 'охранка' – OKHRANKA, not OKHRANA.
    – It wasn't possible to get form Germany to St.Petersburg on a train. In reality it was very interesting journey indeed.
    Most of the video are twisted interpretaions and shortened quotes. It's just bs content.

    I hope this "professor" doesn't teach history anywhere. For God's sake.

  2. The Soviet Union wasn't the first totalitarian regime. In Europe, maybe. In the world, no. Totalitarian regimes existed, e.g., in China, since thousands of years ago. The Qin Dynasty.

  8. 4:49 that map of the Soviet Union is not accurate. The other 14 other soviet republics including the three Baltic states, Ukraine and the Central Asian republics like Kazakhstan are missing. Remember. That territory once belonged to the Czarist Empire centuries before communism had even become a thought.

  9. 0:17 I don't think that was what the Soviet Union looked when the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917; it looks like what Russia looked like when the USSR collapsed in 1991. Russia has usually been called Russia by most people even when communists were in power.

  10. How can you possibly blame Lenin for all the horrors of soviet communism? Why does everyone think that it was Lenin who drastically started it all, and Stalin continued it. Does anyone know how badly paranoid Stalin was? Does anyone know how victims of The Great Purge were psychologically broken down before being executed? Lenin supported democratic centralism, meaning constructive criticism, not outright blind following, which was systemised by Stalin. Without Lenin, Russia would have never been Russia.
    Who pushed Hitler all the way back to Berlin? Who challenged the U.S. when the Americans were intervening in socialist countries? Why does no one talk about American imperialism? Like the time when Chile's and the world's first democratically elected Marxist president Salvador Allende was ousted by a CIA-backed coup under Augusto Pinochet when Nixon was the President?

    Seriously, what kind of a question is this? The October Revolution of 1917 took place because the PEOPLE WANTED IT. The people wanted Russia should pull out of World War I and make peace with Germany. The Provisional Government not only refused to end the war, but also refused to give the peasants land, bread, and even the basic of basic amenities. That was all possible when Lenin intervened. The October Revolution inspired workers to stand up and raise their voices against those lazy capitalists.

  11. Utterly false. To suggest that Lenin overturned the will of the people in 1918 is disgustingly disingenuous. The dissolution of Parliament was justified because the Constituent Assembly did not accurately represent the current will of the people, as the election lists had been compiled before significant political shifts, such as the split between the Left and Right Socialist Revolutionaries. More lies to support capitalist exploitation from PragerU.

  18. Very biased view of history. How about all the good things Lenin managed to achieve?
    1. Equal rights for men and women
    2. Equal rights for kids born in marriage and out of wedlock
    3. Equal access to education for all
    4. Electrification
    5. Separation of church from the state, freedom of religion, atheism allowed
    6. National minorities were allowed to form their own republics or forms of government
    7. 8-hour long working day, the protection of the rights of workers, pensions, vacations, 3 year long maternity leave
    8. No social estates, everyone is equal
    9. Free access to medicine and treatment
    And your video looks like a piece of American propaganda machine.

Stalin summarized the election theory of Marxists: "Who votes is unimportant but WHO COUNTS THE VOTES IS EVERYTHING" Lenin was helped because the Mensheviks under Kerensky were Dim socialists who armed the Bolsheviks & continued the war that destroyed their country! US Sen Huey P. Long understood how if US played nice with Italy & Japan & Britain against Germany, WWII could have been minimized!   34. Not that it matters a lot (certainly did not matter in Lenin’s time) but the pictures in the video show Lenin as of Caucasian ethnicity. Lenin was partially Kalmyk or Chuvash through his father and had a distinctive Asian look to him.

  35. This account leaves out who really funded Lenin. As Gary Allen meticulously documented in his books, Lenin's mercenary army was funded by the wealthiest bankers on earth. They also gave him the bribe money he needed to bribe those around the Tsar to stand down.

It's ironic because in the second half of the World Wars after the 20 year cease fire, what Lenin had created to defeat Russia would come back to destroy Germany in the form of the USSR that Germany actually created by unleashing the Kraken [Lenin]..
