When I did my graduate research studies at the Middle East Institute at Columbia University’s School of International Affairs, I took lots of courses on the concern of the Middle East conflict.
Semester after term, we studied the Middle East conflict as if it was the most intricate conflict on the planet– when in reality, it is probably the simplest dispute worldwide to discuss. It might be the hardest to solve, however it is the simplest to discuss.
In a nutshell, it’s this: One side wants the opposite dead.
Israel wants to exist as a Jewish state and to live in peace. Israel likewise recognizes the right of Palestinians to have their own state and to live in peace. The issue, however, is that many Palestinians and lots of other Muslims and Arabs, do not acknowledge the right of the Jewish state of Israel to exist.
This has actually been true given that 1947, when the United Nations voted to divide the land called Palestine into an arab state and a jewish state.
The Jews accepted the United Nations partition however no Arab or any other Muslim nation accepted it.
When British rule ended on May 15, 1948, the armies of all the neighboring Arab states– Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Transjordan, and Egypt– assaulted the one-day old state of Israel in order to ruin it.
However, to the world’s surprise, the little Jewish state endured.
Then it happened again. In 1967, the dictator of Egypt, Gamal Abdel Nasser, announced his plan, in his words, “to damage Israel.” He put Egyptian troops on Israel’s border, and armies of surrounding Arab nations were likewise activated to attack. Nevertheless, Israel preemptively assaulted Egypt and Syria. Israel did not attack Jordan, and pled Jordan’s king not to sign up with the war. But he did. And only due to the fact that of that did Israel take control of Jordanian land, particularly the “West Bank” of the Jordan River.
Quickly after the war, the Arab states went to Khartoum, Sudan and announced their well-known 3 “No’s: “No recognition, no peace, and no negotiations,”.
What was Israel supposed to do?
Well, one thing Israel did, a bit more than a decade later, in 1978, was to provide the whole Sinai Peninsula– a location of land larger than Israel itself, and with oil– back to Egypt since Egypt, under new leadership, signed a peace agreement with Israel.
So, Israel gave land for the promise of peace with Egypt, and it has always wanted to do the very same thing with the Palestinians. All the Palestinians have actually ever had to do is recognize Israel as a Jewish state and guarantee to live in peace with it.
When Israel has actually proposed trading land for peace– as it did in 2000 when it agreed to provide the Palestinians a sovereign state in more than 95% of the West Bank and all of Gaza– the Palestinian leadership declined the offer, and instead responded by sending out waves of suicide terrorists into Israel.
On the other hand, Palestinian radio, television, and school curricula stay filled with glorification of terrorists, demonization of Jews, and the everyday duplicated message that Israel should disappear.
It’s not tough to explain the Middle-East dispute. One side desires the other dead. The motto of Hamas, the Palestinian rulers of Gaza, is: “We enjoy death as much as the Jews enjoy life.”.
