What Does Diversity Have to Do with Science?|5 Minute Video
Do you care about the race of your physician, or the gender of the person who built the bridge you drive across? The current trend throughout STEM fields claims you should. Heather Mac Donald, Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author of The Diversity Delusion, explains where these damaging ideas are originating from.

The promoters of identity politics– the idea that we are mainly specified by our race and gender– have taken control of the liberal arts and social sciences.
That’s bad.
Not as bad as this: They are moving in on “STEM”– science, innovation, engineering and mathematics.
” All throughout the country,” a UCLA researcher reports, “the big concern is: how can we promote more women and minorities by ‘changing’ (i.e., lowering) the requirements we had previously set for graduate level research study?”
The National Science Foundation (NSF), a federal firm that funds university research, exemplifies this approach. Progress in science, the NSF argues, needs a “diverse STEM workforce.” Why this is the case they do not bother to say. In some way, NSF-backed researchers managed to rack up more than 200 Nobel Prizes before the firm realized that scientific development depends on “diversity.”.
No matter: in July 2017, it granted $1 million to the University of New Hampshire and 2 other organizations to establish a “bias-awareness intervention tool.” Another $2 million went to the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M to “remediate microaggressions and implicit biases.”.
The science diversity charade, as I go over in my book The Diversity Delusion, wastes amazing quantities of time and money that could be going into standard research and its real-world application. The expense would be high enough if that were its only consequence. However identity politics is altering the requirements for clinical competence and the method future researchers are trained.
” Diversity” is now an explicit task qualification in the STEM fields.
The physics department at UC San Diego advertised an assistant-professor position with a “specific focus on contributions to diversity,” such as a prospect’s “awareness of inequities faced by underrepresented groups.” Fixing the mystery of dark energy obviously now takes a back-seat to social justice. Perhaps it was a coincidence, however all five candidates on UC San Diego’s list were women.
If standard standards are keeping ladies and minorities out of STEM fields, it stands to factor that altering requirements must be the method to get them in. Or possibly standards are just another expression of the white patriarchy and thus no longer relevant.
An initial chemistry course at UC Berkeley reflects the brand-new “culturally delicate pedagogy.” A main objective, according to its instructors, is to interrupt the “racialized and gendered construct of clinical luster,” which specifies “great science” as getting all the right answers.
This same diversity fascination reaches medical schools– not a happy idea when they wheel you into the operating room for emergency surgery.
The promoters of identity politics are actually having fun with our lives. Medical schools admissions committees are now told to neglect the low test scores of black and Hispanic applicants in favor of a more “holistic” technique. From 2013 to 2016, medical schools admitted 57 percent of black candidates with a low medical college admission test score of 24 to 26, but just 8 percent of whites and 6 percent of Asians with those same low ratings, according to Claremont McKenna professor Frederick Lynch.
