Politicians lie.
All of us understand that.
That is not an indictment of all politicians– it’s simply part of the video game.
They are expected to help us ferret out fact from fiction. That’s bad when they get a reality incorrect.
When they get a fact wrong, comprehend it’s wrong, and do not remedy it, that’s even worse. That’s not getting a reality inaccurate; that’s a lie. Which’s journalistic malfeasance.
The absolute best (or perhaps worst) example of this followed a governmental press conference at Trump Tower on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.
You remember what happened that previous weekend: A group of white supremacists held a.
” white pride” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The evident factor was to object the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
An Antifa group appeared to counter-protest. The mayor and the authorities were totally unprepared to handle the violence that took place. Regrettably, a woman, Heather Heyer, was run over and eliminated by a neo-Nazi.
Journalism conference itself was raucous. The media was antagonistic. The president was combative.
Out of it all, one expression eclipsed the many words exchanged: The media reported that President Trump explained neo-Nazis as “extremely great people.”.
Merely the opposite: he condemned the neo-Nazis in no unsure terms. Then, who were the “great people” he pointed out?
The response: He was explaining another group of Charlottesville demonstrators who came out that weekend– protestors who desired the Robert E. Lee statue eliminated and protestors who wished to keep the statue and restore the park’s original name.
This is what President Trump mentioned about those peaceful protestors: “You similarly had some extremely great individuals on both sides … You had individuals since group that were there to oppose the taking down of– to them– an actually, extremely important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.”.
A few minutes later on, in case there would be any misunderstanding, he makes his significance a lot more particular. “… I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists. They must be condemned totally.”.
Lest you have any doubts that exceptional people were in Charlottesville to object the elimination of the.
Robert E Lee statue, the New York Times validated it in a story they published the next day, August 16.
“‘ Good people can go to Charlottesville,’ stated Michelle Piercy, a graveyard shift employee at a Wichita, Kansas retirement community, who drove all night with a conservative group that opposed the prepared elimination of a statue of the Confederate standard Robert E. Lee. After listening to Mr. Trump on Tuesday, she stated it was as if he had actually directed her and her buddies … who had no interest in standing with Nazis or white supremacists …”.
