Attempt this at your next celebration. Ask your visitors to specify the term Social Justice.
Okay, it’s not Charades or Twister, however it needs to generate some interesting discussion, particularly if your visitors are on the political Left.
Because everybody on that side of the spectrum talks incessantly about social justice, they should have the ability to provide a good definition, right? But ask 10 liberals to tell you what they suggest by social justice and you’ll get 10 different responses. That’s due to the fact that Social Justice implies anything its champions want it to suggest.
Nearly without exception, labor colleges, universities and unions, public charities and private structures claim at least part of their objective to be the spreading of Social Justice everywhere.
Here’s the Mission Statement of the AFL-CIO, but it might be the objective declaration for a thousand such companies: “The objective of the AFL-CIO is to enhance the lives of working households– to bring financial justice to the work environment, and social justice to our country.” In other words, “social justice” is code for great things no one needs to argue for– and nobody dare be against.
This quite bothered the excellent financial expert Friedrich Hayek. This is what he wrote in 1976, 2 years after winning the Nobel Prize in Economics. “I have actually pertained to feel strongly that the greatest service I can still render to my fellow males would be that I might make the speakers and authors amongst them thoroughly ashamed ever once again to use the term ‘social justice’.”.
Why was Hayek so upset by what looks like such a favorable, and certainly unobjectionable, term? Due to the fact that Hayek, as he so often did, saw right to the core of the issue. And what he saw scared him.
Hayek comprehended that underneath the political opportunism and intellectual laziness of the term “social justice” was a pernicious philosophical claim, specifically that liberty must be sacrificed in order to rearrange income.
What are great things? Well whatever the champs of social justice choose this week.
According to the teaching of Social Justice, the haves always have too much, the have nots, never ever have enough. You do not have to take my word for it. That is specifically how a UN report on Social Justice defines the term: “Social justice might be broadly understood as the fair and caring circulation of the fruits of economic growth. Social justice is not possible without strong and coherent redistributive policies developed and executed by public firms.” Let me repeat that: “Coherent and strong redistributive policies developed and carried out by public agencies.”.
And it becomes worse.
The UN report goes on to firmly insist that: “Present-day believers in an absolute truth identified with virtue and justice are neither ready nor preferable companions for the protectors of social justice.” Translation: if you believe reality and justice are principles independent of the agenda of the forces of progress as specified by the left, you are an enemy of social justice.
