How did we get here? I suggest, literally. Not simply you and me, but the entire shebang. How is any sort of life possible? The universe is a hostile place– solar flares, cosmic rays, asteroids flying about. The odds versus our presence are truly astronomical.
Take it from me– I’m an astrophysicist. My job is to look out into space, at stars and galaxies, trying to answer these standard how-did-the-universe-come-to-be questions.
Well, those who have a religious faith have an answer: God.
The earth’s range from the sun, the size of the atom, and a thousand other things large and little that enable us to live and to breathe and to think all appear perfectly tuned for our existence. To lots of, this style suggests a designer. From a simply scientific point of view, the faithful have a huge problem: They can provide no indisputable evidence for this belief.
It’s probably not surprising that over 70% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences state themselves to be atheists due to the fact that of the absence of hard proof.
