Here’s a medical wonder for you: a drug that eliminates pain, decreases stress and anxiety, enhances your state of mind, and has no negative effects.
Too good to be true? Well, millions of Americans think that drug is cannabis.
Are they right?
I’m a doctor, board-certified internist, and addiction medicine professional. I’ve dealt with countless individuals whose addictions to opiates, alcohol, and other drugs were wrecking their relationships, their careers, and their lives. And I’m telling you cannabis can be both hazardous and addicting, similar to lots of other substances.
What I’ve seen firsthand for twenty years is now ending up being obvious to other medical professionals and researchers: increased usage of marijuana is resulting in increased psychosis, bipolar mania, and even spontaneous throwing up, specifically in teenagers and young people. The younger the user, the less developed their brain, the more harmful the drug.
I hate to break your bubble, however that is the science.
A 2022 Gallup survey found 30% of Americans in between 18 and 34 usage marijuana. When researchers at the University of Michigan asked young people in between 19 and 30 if they ‘d used it within the previous month, 29% said yes in 2021, compared to 21% in 2016 and 17% in 2011.
Daily cannabis usage across any ages almost doubled from 6% in 2011 to 11% in 2021. That equates into over 13 million Americans, compared with 5 million in the years in the past.
There is no such thing as a “bad” drug. They are simply particles that affect the human physiology. Many Americans use some kind of a recreational compound. Ignoring or denying prospective negative results develops the potential for major damage. There is no complimentary lunch with mother nature so there are constantly negative effects. My objective here is not to shame or scare anyone, however to raise awareness so you can make informed decisions.
Mentioning that, keep in mind that cannabis has gone corporate. According to Forbes, legal marijuana is now a 20 billion dollar market and growing. There’s a great deal of vested interest in making certain you don’t hear the bad news.
However there are dangers. And the more you use, and the greater the concentrations, the more the danger.
Of course, most people who utilize marijuana will not have a psychotic break, establish bipolar disorder, or become schizophrenic– just as the majority of people who consume do not establish alcoholic liver illness or alcohol dementia.
Some people– and not a small number– will have a significant response to cannabis. And there is no way to understand in advance. You won’t understand till it occurs. And after that it might be too late.
It wasn’t always like this. The cannabis people use today is not the weed of my generation. It hasn’t been for a minimum of twenty years.
What altered?
The response is discovered in 3 letters: THC
THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary psychoactive– or mind-altering– element of cannabis; it’s what gets you high.
