If there is a God, why exists so much evil? The responses to these issues, as Boston College theorist Peter Kreeft describes, go to the heart of ethics, morality and how we understand what it suggests to be a great individual.

I’m going to argue for the presence of God from the center that ethical great and wicked really exist. They are not just a matter of specific taste. Not simply substitutes for “I like” and “I do not like.”.
Before I start, let’s get one misinterpreting out of the method. My argument does not suggest that atheists can’t be ethical. Clearly atheists can act morally, merely as theists can act immorally.
Let’s start then with an issue about excellent and wicked: ‘Where do exceptional and wicked come from?”.
Atheists normally propose a few possibilities. Amongst these are development, aspect, conscience, utilitarianism, and mankind.
I will reveal you that none of these can be the supreme source of morality.
Due to the fact that any expected morality that is developing can change. Based on a simply evolutionary model, that is an ever-changing view of morality, who is to state that it will not be acceptable once again one day? And if you can make that difference you are confessing to objective morality.
While thinking is a powerful tool to help us find and comprehend morality, it can not be the source of morality. And was it thinking– or something higher than thinking– that led those Gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust?
Nor can conscience alone be the source of morality. How can you say your conscience is best and Himmler’s wrong if conscience alone is the source of morality?
Some people state ‘humankind’ is the ultimate source of morality. However humanity can lead us to do all sorts of reprehensible things. Humanity is the factor we require morality. Our mankind leads a few of us to do genuine evil, and leads everyone to be selfish, unkind, egocentric and small. I question you would want to reside in a world where human nature was offered free reign.
Utilitarianism is the claim that what is ethically ideal is determined by whatever creates ‘the best pleasure for the greatest number.’ However to go back to our slavery example: if ninety percent of people will get fantastic take advantage of enslaving the other ten percent, would that make slavery right? According to utilitarianism it would.
We’ve seen where morality can’t stem from. Now let’s see where it does stem from.
