Master after master, from Leonardo, to Rembrandt, to Bierstadt, produced works that motivated, uplifted, and deepened us. And they did this by requiring of themselves the greatest standards of quality, enhancing upon the work of each previous generation of masters, and continuing to aim to the greatest quality attainable.
Something happened on the method to the 20th Century. The extensive, the motivating and the lovely were replaced by the new, the different, and the awful. Today the silly, the meaningless, and the simply offensive are held up as the very best of modern-day art.
Michelangelo carved his “David” out of a rock. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art simply provides us a rock,– a rock– all 340 lots of it. That’s how far requirements have fallen. How did this take place? How did the thousand-year ascent towards creative perfection and quality pass away out?
It didn’t. It was pushed out. Starting in the late 19th century, a group dubbed The Impressionists rebelled against the French Academie des Beaux Arts and its demand for classical standards. Whatever their intentions, the new modernists sowed the seeds of aesthetic relativism– the “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” mentality.
Today everybody likes the Impressionists. And, as with a lot of transformations, the first generation or two produced work of real benefit. Monet, Renoir, and Degas still maintained elements of disciplined design and execution, but with each new generation requirements decreased up until there were no standards. All that was left was individual expression.
The fantastic art historian Jacob Rosenberg composed that quality in art “is not merely a matter of personal opinion but to a high degree … objectively traceable.” The concept of a universal requirement of quality in art is now generally fulfilled with strong resistance if not open ridicule.
” How can art be objectively measured?” I’m challenged. In responding, I merely point to the creative results produced by universal requirements compared to what is produced by relativism. The previous gave the world “The Birth of Venus” and “The Dying Gaul,” while the latter has given us “The Holy Virgin Mary,” made with cow dung and adult images, and “Petra,” the prize-winning sculpture of a policewoman urinating and crouching– total with a puddle of synthetic urine.
Without visual standards we have no way to determine quality or inferiority. It is only after they provide really eloquent responses that I notify them that the painting is actually a close up of my studio apron.
