All over the world, nationalism is winning elections. Many see this nationalist revival as the fantastic danger of our time, fearing that nationalism will take us back to a more primitive and racist past.
It wasn’t long ago that fantastic political figures such as Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt, David Ben-Gurion and Mahatma Gandhi, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher acknowledged what I call the virtue of nationalism.
So, what is this virtue?
A nationalist thinks that the world is governed best when nations are complimentary to chart their own independent course, cultivating their customs and pursuing their interests without disturbance. Nationalism is not about bigotry.
Certainly, countries can a pursue a range of different policies in diplomacy and trade. Nationalism is the reverse of imperialism– or globalism or transnationalism– which are all names for the effort to bring peace and success to the world by joining humanity under a single political authority.
The dispute in between globalists and nationalists, then, is over whether we ought to want a world of lots of independent countries– or to be one merged super-state, like the informed “Federation” of the Star Trek films. A case can be produced both sides of the argument.
