If the very best of America could be embodied in one man, that guy would be Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.
Born upon February 12, 1809, Lincoln lived his early years in a log cabin with a dirt flooring. He explained his youth and teenage years in Kentucky and later on Indiana in bleak terms, as “the behind of this world.”
His father, Thomas Lincoln, didn’t see much beneficial worth in main education and his kid received almost none.
Young Lincoln’s instincts pointed in a totally different direction. And, assisted by a near-photographic memory, he maintained whatever he read.
At age 19, now 6 feet 4 inches high, he handled flatboats carrying freight down the Mississippi river finally settling as a store clerk in New Salem, Illinois. There, Lincoln quickly developed a reputation for outstanding humor, meticulous sincerity, and an extreme decision “to optimize himself.”.
In 1832, following a stint in the state militia, he chose to pursue a legal profession.
Like various attorneys, he was drawn to politics. In 1834, he won election to the state legislature.
Lincoln backed the tenets of the Whig party, which had been organized by Senator Henry Clay as a breakaway from the dominant Democratic celebration. Clay and the Whigs supported policies which would construct nationwide industrial infrastructure like canals and roads, develop an across the country bank to stimulate investment and development into the west, and develop tariffs around having a hard time American markets to protect them from foreign rivals.
For many Northern Whigs like Lincoln, slavery was likewise a problem; and in 1837, Lincoln made his very first public declaration versus slavery, condemning it as “based on oppression and bad policy.”.
In 1846, Lincoln was chosen to Congress to represent the recently produced Seventh District in central Illinois. What he hoped would be the start of an occupation in national politics rapidly fizzled. Lincoln knocked President James Polk, a Democrat, for goading Mexico into war. It was a principled but out of favor position and cost him re-election.
