4. Remember the Sabbath|5 Minute Video
Don’t Be a Slave Reserving a day off each week was an advanced principle when it was first introduced as the Fourth Commandment. But this Commandment does more: it extends that day off to animals and servants and thus set in motion the slow procedure of ending slavery and the compassionate treatment of animals. As Dennis Prager explains, the power of the Fourth Commandment to alter your life is no less genuine today than it was for our ancient ancestors. Simply ask the partner of a workaholic how she would feel if her partner took off a day each week to invest with friends and family.

When you understand it, nevertheless, you will acknowledge how life-changing, even world-changing, the Sabbath rule is. And you will begin to value how appropriate it is to your own life.
The Fourth Commandment checks out: “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. Six days you will labor and do all your work, however the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you will refrain from doing any work, neither you, nor your son nor daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any immigrant living in your towns.” Why is this so important?
Maybe more than any other rule, it elevated the human being. How so? For nearly all of human history, life consisted overwhelmingly of work. In result, humans were monsters of concern. This commandment and only this rule changed all that by insisting that people cease working one day out of seven.
Second, more than any other commandment, the Sabbath Day advises people that they are meant to be complimentary. As the second version of the Commandment– the one summed up by Moses in the Book of Deuteronomy– states, “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt.” To put it simply, remember that slaves can not have a Sabbath. Due to this, I may add that in the Biblical view, unless required for survival, people who pick to work seven days a week are essentially slaves– servants to work or possibly to money, however slaves nevertheless. The millionaire who works 7 days a week is merely an abundant servant.
Third, while the Bible could not widely eliminate slavery, the Sabbath commandment significantly humanized that terrible organization and even helped make slavery difficult. By definition, a slave owner was under no commitment to enable a slave to ever rest, let alone to rest one day every week.
When a person takes off from work one day every week, that day practically undoubtedly ends up being a day spent with other people– particularly, family and/or good friends. Ask anybody wed to a workaholic how great it would be for their marriage if the workaholic would not work for one day each week– and you can appreciate the power of the Sabbath Day.
Even one’s animals had to rest one day a week. Individuals who felt divinely obliged to offer their animals a day of rest were much less most likely to treat their animals cruelly any day of the week.
