6. Do Not Murder | 5 Minute Video
You Can Kill, but You Can’t Murder
If asked to state this Commandment, most people would say “Do Not Kill.” This is understandable because the classic King James Bible translates it this way. But the English language has changed since 1610. Furthermore, Hebrew has two words for killing just as English does. The correct translation, as Dennis Prager explains, is “Do Not Murder.” Once you grasp this, the meaning of the commandment changes entirely.

You would think that of all the Ten Commandments the one that needs the least explaining is the Sixth, because it seems so clear. It is the one that the King James Bible, the most widely used English translation of the Bible, translates as “Thou shall not kill.” Yet, the truth is the quite the opposite. This is probably the least well understood of the Ten Commandments.
The reason is that the Hebrew original does not say, “Do not kill.” It says, “Do not murder.” Both Hebrew and English have two words for taking a life – one is “kill” (harag, in Hebrew) and the other is “murder” (ratzach in Hebrew).
The difference between the two is enormous. Kill means:
1) Taking any life — whether of a human being or an animal.
2) Taking a human life deliberately or by accident.
3) Taking a human life legally or illegally, morally or immorally.
On the other hand, murder can only mean one thing:
The illegal or immoral taking of a human life.
That’s why we say, “I killed a mosquito,” not “I murdered a mosquito.”
And that’s why, we would say, “the worker was accidentally killed,” not “the worker was accidentally murdered.”
So why did the King James translation of the Bible use the word “kill” rather than “murder”? Because 400 years ago when the translation was made, “kill” was synonymous with “murder.” As a result, some people don’t realize that English has changed since 1610 and therefore think that the Ten Commandments prohibits all killing. But, of course, it doesn’t. If the Ten Commandments forbade killing, we would all have to be vegetarians — killing animals would be prohibited. And we would all have to be pacifists — since we could not kill even in self-defense.
However, you don’t have to know how the English language has evolved in order to understand that the Ten Commandments could not have prohibited all killing. The very same part of the Bible that contains the Ten Commandments — the Five Books of Moses, the Torah as it is known by Jews — commands the death penalty for murder; allows killing in war; prescribes animal sacrifice, and allows eating meat.
A correct understanding of the commandment against murder is crucial because, while virtually every modern translation correctly translates the commandment as “Do not murder”, many people cite the King James translation to justify two positions that have no biblical basis: Opposition to capital punishment and pacifism.
Regarding capital punishment and the Bible, the only law that appears in each one of the Five Books of Moses is that murderers be put to death. Opponents of the death penalty are free to hold the view that all murderers should be allowed to live. But they are not free to cite the Bible to support their view. Yet, many do. And they always cite the Commandment, “Do not kill.” But that, as should now be abundantly clear, is not what the commandment says, and it is therefore an invalid argument.
As regards pacifism, the belief that it is always wrong to kill a human being, again, anyone is free to hold this position, as immoral as it may be. And what other word than “immoral” can one use to describe forbidding the killing of someone who is in the process of murdering innocent men, women and children, in, let’s say, a movie theater or a school?

No kill. Never fire. It is bad for health to kill because it reduces love, peace, and life, and it reduces positive thoughts.
No boxing. It is bad for health to do boxing. It is wrong to talk with violent boxers.
We are not allowed to kill in self defence, because Jesus Christ said on Bible Love and Forgive.
If you Forgive you will never kill. Jesus Christ said it is always wrong to kill.
No killing. Never kill. It is wrong to kill even if it is self defence. Bible said forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
There is no killing in Forgive.
Forgiveness is no revenge or no killing. Jesus Christ said not to fight back and not kill. Love your enemies. We are not allowed to kill.
ALL Christians should be insisting on licences for gun ownership. This doesn't go against the death penalty!!! But it would reduce so much murder, as it would reduce so many public shootings!!!
Don't Murder people😳

This is easily discounted when you consider the fact that Jesus called you to "love your enemy as you love your neighbor" "turn the other cheek", some examples of him denouncing violence is when he healed the soldiers ear, after Peter cut it off. Jesus also never brandished a weapon or threatened physical violence on his enemies. He taught them and rebuked them to the point that they tortured and crucified him.
As it is, not all killing is murder. Murder is killing of a just person and/or taking a life when it isn’t necessary.
Pacifism is a useless tool. Not defending yourself is the same as committing suicide. Suicide is murder. Defending your life is a virtue and is a human right. Killing in self defense isn’t murder at all regardless.
Yep Because murder means when a person trying to kill you first just like a bully trying to hurt you and revenge is the same thing.
Meanwhile, God ordered Abraham to murder his son, Isaac.
Mascarading?
Contradictions?
"It says "you shalt not kill", but the truth is quite the opposite" 😂 No work for TallBart here
In the German bible translation by Martin Luther there's the same translation error: "Du sollst nicht töten" instead of "Du sollst nicht morden".
Allows killing in war? Of course if god says you can kill it's ok I guess. Killing in war is just legalized murder. It's not right either. So much for Bible morality.
we may not agree religiously (I'm a Christian) but there is nothing wrong with learning the original language and understanding makes the bible more understandable
🤔What happens when for ex. There's a shootout and both men are hit. You die first and supposedly get to heaven. And later the man dies of his injuries. Thou shalt not kill. And he was not dead when you died.🧐
Wow
I live in a large city where murder happens all the time among street gangs. A minor action or offense can result in death. So much for this commandment being obvious and the thought that we truly live in a modern world. They need the in-depth learning, study and reinforcement that Judaism involves. Most of these people profess to being some sort of Christian.
Ethics > morals
Klaus Schwab etc need to be careful then. Self defence and times of war is included here.
Religion has never really had a big problem with murder. More people have been killed in the name of God than for any other reason.
All you have to do is look at Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Kashmir, the Inquisition, the Crusades, Native American genocide, and the World Trade Center to see how seriously the religious folk take "Thou shalt not kill". The more devout they are, the more they see murder as being negotiable.
Do not murder
What about killing plants?
This commandment plenty of people have committed taking people life I'm not talking about self defense no I'm talking about just shear hatred
Dennis…Was the crucifixion of Jesus legal or illegal?
Killing and murder go hand and hand, that doesn’t justify killing in some cases. Wether it’s murder or vengeance by your own hand. Jesus has the last say in your life.
God commanded Amalek to be exterminated before their corruption spread: every man, woman, child, and even their animals.
Apparently we're now seeing the globalist result of that.
Good 👏
6th commandment is don't commit adultery
What if I think capital punishment is immoral?
Isaiah 66.3 explain that?
Interesting analysis.
Thank you
How about pregnancy control..
This is wrong – its really a preckvicktion of gauzement #3 nit to harm others of self who aren't conflourbed through tricks preckvoberateed against: coalitionaries of : deflourbed understanding preck'svated by: idiots tricking themselves with signing – items against 'time' constituencies against ReITy With ScuLpTures ' Speiking: parental 'work of digging /hauling – materials as 'twi'ffed with idiotic identhologies against 'original gauzemwnt #1 not to prescronerate anything above 'ALL that Is '
Sounds like justification for the second most murderous religion in the world. Spoken like a true defense attorney facing the defense on semantics. But I guess what do you expect from a religion that believes that God tells a man to murder his son and then the last minute says oh I was only joking I just wanted to see if you would do it.
It is always wrong to murder someone for being different or no clear reason like murdering a person with autism for fun or being a "burden" to the world to live longer as the eugenics does want to but killing a dangerous person is a right decision to make for the sake of others as someone who kill that particular person and save the world from the reign of terror of the dangerous person like the law enforcers do.
I haven’t killed anyone in the legal and moral sense but I have murdered many through my words.😢 Thank God for His forgiveness.
“He who is without sin can cast the first stone”
capital punishment isn’t the way. Just have them rot in a cell for the rest of there life.. before gods judgment of course. No need to have the state hire men to “kill or murder” in this case who knows what to call it.
