Why Teachers Unions Don’t Want School Choice | 5 Minute Video
Take the pledge for school choice! http://www.schoolchoicenow.com
Can every child receive a good education? With school choice and competition, yes. The problem? Powerful teachers unions oppose school choice. But when teachers and parents understand why school choice works, they support it. Rebecca Friedrichs, a public school teacher who took her case against the teachers union all the way to the Supreme Court, explains why school choice is the right choice.

What if schools had to compete for students in the same way that businesses have to compete for customers? Would schools get better or worse?
There’s no need to guess.
In almost every state and city where there is competition today, educational outcomes improve – often dramatically. This competition is called school choice, and many states and cities now embrace it.
With the old model, under which most American children still live, the government – not the parent – decides which school children will attend.
Now, here’s how school choice works:
The money follows the student. Every child receives funding that their parents can direct to the school of their choice – public, private, charter or even homeschool.
According to researchers at the University of Arkansas – in the most comprehensive study done to date — students in school choice programs saw their reading and math scores improve by 27 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
Sounds like something we should get behind, doesn’t it? But for millions of families in my home state of California and in many others, school choice is not a choice.
And there’s one reason why: teachers’ unions.
I’ve been a teacher for 28 years, and served as a leader in a local affiliate of the California Teachers Association — so I’ve seen this problem from the inside. Teachers in California public schools are coerced to pay dues to the teachers’ unions. True, we cannot be forced to join, but we are forced to pay the union. Their fees are mandatory – and expensive. In California alone, the unions raise over 300 million dollars every year. What do the unions do with all that money? They lobby the government for more money – more money for public education. That might sound good, but it’s really just a smoke screen.
The National Center for Education Statistics reports that since 1970, public school attendance in the U.S. has gone up by just five percent, while public school employment has gone up 95 percent!
More public school employment means more dues for the unions. But does it mean better schools? Certainly not in California, which ranks 45th in the nation in reading and math despite spending over 55 billion dollars a year on education. That’s over 52% of the state’s total budget. Yet rarely is anyone held accountable for these dismal results. I’ve personally seen excellent, new teachers lose their jobs while incompetent, and even abusive, veteran teachers keep theirs because of the unions’ infamous “last in, first out” layoff and tenure rules.
For these reasons and more, parents almost always prefer school choice when allowed to choose. This is obviously true for wealthy parents who can afford to send their children to any school they want, but it’s equally true for middle class and poor parents when they have a choice. And here’s the real giveaway: public school teachers are less likely to send their children to public schools when given the choice.

I would have one condition. The students should be the ones choosing the schools, not the parents. Otherwise, the parents are doing the same thing they didn’t want the government to do
School choice would never work as education is a credence good meaning you have no idea if its good or not unless your a teacher or educator, and even still you would need to go through that schools whole curriculum. Which would only happen if you were the student aka the person not choosing the school. If you want to treat education as a business imagine if you went to a store to buy your kid food but all of the food and water was canned, they all say their good for you but you have no idea if its good. How would you know? Your kid would have to tell you outright if its a good school but what if their allergic and whoop your kids dead. So how do we fix education?
1. Fund schools equally regardless of nearby property value, 1 kid could be worth 20,000 dollars and if a school has 100 kids they could get 2,000,000$ so on and so forth
2. Fund them regularly like charter schools so that public schools dont have to burrow money from wall street and pay them back plus interest (weird how charter schools get regular funding and public schools dont).
3. Arm teachers to cut back on security spending like SROS which havent been shown to decrease school shootings
4. Get rid of principals superintendents and school boards, make it so teachers individually choose their own way of teaching and make it so teachers can elect to change the school lay out or hire new teachers, which has been done in charter schools called Edvision.
School choice is a scape goat for decades of underfunding and kneecapping (done mostly by the right) that makes people look and feel bad as it makes people feel like theyre harming family bonds, school choice wont work at all and will lead to already underfunded schools losing kids and losing funding leading to a death spiral that will lead to areas being unable to give kids (mostly black kids) the education they need and continue the cycle of racism.
As a teacher, if there is ever a school choice, I will forever be giving everyone an A+ and ample playtime in class.. Most popular teacher ever. Let's please our voters
School Choice can be good or bad:
Good because a parent can choose a better school for her children.
Bad because bad children from ghettos can go to the same school your children go to and it wouldn't matter that you pay for expensive housing to avoid that.
For me, I don't trust any public schools because they all use the same system and same curriculum/ brainwashing.
My homeschooled children learn and play with other great children from respectable Christian families.Ultrasound Radiation kills at least 40% of the eggs in a baby girl's ovaries and a boy's sperm in testicles.
If I go back in time, I would not have done any Ultrasounds at all since they're more harmful than X-Rays and they target your and your child's DNA.
They reduce fertility, especially in the child.
If there's no medical emergency, I would never do Ultrasound, it's an unnecessary and unbenign procedure.
Lmfao this is some hardcore gaslighting, do y'all really fall for this shit? Did you know that most private school teachers send their kids to public school? No I don't have any evidence to support it but know that I will say and do anything to tell you unions are bad.
So incredibly disingenuous and deceitful. Even though it’s six years old, it’s terrible.
Administrators are also a big chunk of the expense of running a public (i.e., government) school. What do they earn in comparison to an experienced teacher? Plz do a video on this, too. Thanks, Prager U!
This is subsidizing private schools for the wealthy. Even with vouchers the poor & middle class will never be able to afford private school fees.
Pay for something of which you are not a part and get no benefits? That’s called communism!
Great Video!
Thank you.
These numbers are literally all wrong. 6 years ago and today. PragerU, site sources please. You are so dumb. Omitting is one thing, but straight up lying?! Get bent.
wait, I am confused, at the start of the video I thought you meant school choice like students and parents can choose were they go to school, because currently you have to live in the neighborhood of the school you want to attend or want your kid to attend, the neighborhoods with really good schools it costs more to live at thus making it so richer individuals are better educated and that is just counting public school which is paid for by the government. it seems you are just anti union which those are absolutly necessary because they ensure fair wages, as long as they are not being forced to pay more than 1,000$ a year mandatory unions are probably a good thing because then teachers are not swayed out of going with the union, unions help increase worker wages so much that the amount wage increase is a lot more than 1,000$ a year, and it is the state government that controls what must be taught and what must not, not the unions, if the government is too strict the unions help teachers fight to be able to teach how they want to.
its a better option.
i rather have same sex gender schools that only allow men to teach the boys. boys learn better with men
There’s no way school choice is supposed to get better results for all students if right wingers are pushing it.
The American right-wing benefits from keeping people uneducated.
With school choice, does the voucher cover the entire cost of private school tuition? Or do parents still have to pay more?
https://youtu.be/AF1xkJmNlO4
American parents can't choose their childs school? I live in northern Ireland and my parents chose my schools. It sounds ridiculous to me for the government to control the school kids go to.
School choice is a really basic common sense policy.
As Thomas Sowell's stated, unions are only in it for themselves and getting the dues money, (that they won't get with non-union schools) a great deal of which is given to political candidates.
Sounds like union busting to me. Another way for private corporations to take money from the government. If you don't believe CEOs and administrative costs will take most of that money instead of going to teachers I know a nice bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn that's up for sale. Private and charter schools can expel students that public schools would have to take. Like you said it's easier to fire teachers at private schools.
👍🙏excellent video
Mind CONTROL FREAKS!
RULE #1: The Private Sector always does more with less. The Public Sector always does less with more.
Because they can't control the narritive… BRAINWASHING CAMPS against the AMERICAN standards and family unit…they don't want you to think for yourself…just repeat after me!
We are UNIQUE for (a) REASON…WE ARE SUPPOSED TO THINK!
Learning about how our governmental system is one thing, but in most cases, government has no place in our children's schools and classrooms. Let all schools compete for students like businesses do with customers and teach these kids to be productive, smart and responsible members of society. Pro school choice all the way and all for abolishion of teachers unions🙌🇺🇸
Most people have no idea what school choice is
California, State of indoctrination
I’ve stated for most of my life that the unions don’t belong in our education system. Maybe, finally it’s resonating!
It should go to the Supreme Court again.
What about the monoploization of education? What happens when evangelical schools "out-compete" all other faith groups/ public schools forcing your child to receive Evangelical indoctrination. Not worried because "HUR DUR IMMA CHRISTIAN" what if an Islamic school uses the same buy and trash tactics of the Evangelical Right and forces your child to go to an Islamic school, still cool with that? NO GODS NO KINGS
Why are teachers even allowed to have unions?
U may have a pint on some of these issues. But unions fight for workers rights and protect people’s jobs and salaries so in a way if unions didn’t exist then teachers could lose workers rights and can be abused and maybe as teaching will be such an unpopular choice for jobs The there will be a lack of teachers decades later
I attended LAUSD. union strong and some of the worst schools for poor families. give them a choice and the ones who care will go out of their way to give their kids a better education.
Both George Meany and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were horrified at the idea of government unions having the power to strike and shut the country down when they are not obeyed. They thought it was totally undemocratic and were dead against the idea. Then it came in anyway in the '50s, when no one was looking. A democracy is supposed to be run by the people, not by powerful government unions…
organized crime is the mafia. unorganized crime is the government
She even has the voice of a villain. You can’t make this shit up.
education should be thought at home we dont need schools we dont need to get up in the morning and learn useless stuff we got the internet and books and people its utter noncence.
