It’s difficult to imagine there would have been a United States of America without George Washington.
He existed at the birth of the nation. He effectively directed it through war and supported it in peace.
How did he do it?
Not by being a fantastic basic, a powerful political theorist, or perhaps a creative politician. He was none of those things.
And yet, he was appreciated by generals, political theorists and political leaders. Why?
Due to the fact that he was a male great males trusted. He was one of the tallest males of his age at six-foot-three.
Let’s begin with his guts. That was never ever in doubt. If anything, he had too much of it.
Bold to the point of rashness as a young man, he defended the British against the French over control of the Ohio Valley, then the Western-most point of the American wilderness.
Throughout that conflict, known as the Indian and french War, and the American Revolution, Washington was constantly in the thick of the action. His assistants often struggled to keep him from rising too far ahead of his own soldiers. In one fight, his coat was pierced four times by musket fire. Horses were shot out from under him. Remarkably, some would say astonishingly, he was never injured– not so much as a flesh injury.
By the time the revolution broke out in April of 1775, Washington was firmly committed to the cause of American independence. He got here in Philadelphia in May of that year to provide his services to the Continental Congress. He was quickly made leader of the new rebel army. There was just one problem: there was no army to mention. There was simply a rag-tag collection of state militias. How was Washington going to defeat the best military force in the world with that?
It was an issue the general had problem with for 8 and a half years. That he managed to hold the army together, arrange it into a disciplined combating force and guide it to victory was testament to his fortitude, his persistence, and his individual bravery.
Of his stability, one requirement just to take a look at what he did when the war ended: exactly what he promised to do when the war started. He resigned his military command and went home to Mt. Vernon.
It is stated that King George III asked the London-based American painter Benjamin West what Washington was most likely to do when peace came. West responded that Washington would most likely return to his farm.
This story may be apocryphal, but the Newburgh Rebellion, and how Washington managed it, is not. With experience had come knowledge.
As the revolution injury down, a group of officers refused to quit their arms till they were paid. If they didn’t get their money, which Congress didn’t have, they would take control of the federal government. It was not an idle risk. No less a figure than Alexander Hamilton was in a panic.
Washington, no great orator, sought to pacify their anger. They had run the risk of everything to produce a republican society, he told the officers. To desert the cause now, when true success was so close, would mean all their sacrifices would have failed.
Nevertheless encouraging the speech may have been, it was a simple gesture that won. Washington concluded his remarks by checking out to them a letter sent to him from a member of Congress. Suddenly, he stopped. From his pocket, he pulled a pair of eyeglasses. None of the officers had actually ever seen him use them. Putting the glasses on, Washington said, “Gentlemen, you should pardon me. I have actually grown gray in the service of my nation and now discover myself going blind.”
He ended up reading the letter and left the hall without another word. The gesture, all the best used with simply the ideal touch of stagecraft, pierced the hearts of his males. Numerous were relocated to tears. They right away passed a resolution declaring their commitment to civilian federal government. George Washington had conserved the transformation once again.
