American Progressives look to Western Europe as the model of what America should be. So, here’s an area of European social policy that Progressives will definitely want to examine more closely: Europe’s attitude toward…abortion.

It happens to be much more restrictive than that of the United States. That’s right. Western Europeans — as progressive and secular as they are — have a much more conservative attitude about abortion than American Progressives do.

Here is what Emily Matchar wrote in The Atlantic magazine in 2013: “I assumed that Western Europe would be the land of abortion on demand…But as it turns out, abortion laws in Europe are both more restrictive and more complicated than that. Waiting periods, decried by American pro-choicers as…unreasonably burdensome, are common…”

In Germany, for example, nearly all abortions are illegal after 12 weeks. And there is a three-day waiting period and mandatory counseling before a woman is allowed to have an abortion, even during the permitted first 12 weeks. That’s more restrictive than Texas.

In the U.S., abortions are legal in every state before a pregnancy has reached its 20th week. After that some restrictions do kick in. 11 states prohibit abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy. 20 states prohibit abortions at the point of viability, which is when a baby can survive outside the womb. Those states usually recognize that as being between 23-25 weeks…3 states prohibit abortion after the 28th week…And 7 states plus Washington, D.C. allow abortions to be performed at any point in a pregnancy — even if the mother could safely give birth to a viable and healthy baby.

But in Belgium, like Germany, abortions are permissible only until the 12th week. After that an abortion is permitted only if the woman’s life is in danger. Furthermore, any woman getting an abortion must wait six days after her first medical consultation before an abortion can be performed.

Denmark is similar: After 12 weeks all sorts of restrictions apply. Pregnant women in Finland also have until the 12th week of pregnancy to get an unrestricted abortion, and during those first 12 weeks, a woman must provide a compelling reason for ending her pregnancy.

In France, too, abortion on demand is legal only up to 12 weeks, after which it becomes much more difficult. Socialist Sweden allows abortions until the 18th week of pregnancy, and bans most after the 22nd week. In that four week “gray” period, a woman can get an abortion, but only if it is approved by the National Board of Health and Welfare.

In the Netherlands, before having an abortion a woman has to wait five days and attend a counseling session in which she must be informed of the different options available to her, including taking the pregnancy to term and giving her baby up for adoption. A minor under the age of 18 cannot have an abortion at any time unless she has the consent of her parents.

  1. I’m so glad you guys have taken the pro-life stance. I always thought the death penalty was inhumane too.

    Oh wait, conservatives are trying to enact the death penalty as constitutional. So much for pro-life I guess.

  4. In my state of Oregon, the leftists have dominated voting with their big city college wokies, so abortion is available on demand and people can come from other states and countries just to kill their unborn child. Sodom and Gomorrah will be laughing at us on judgment day.

I remember when the left, including snooty Europeans, were telling us what a bunch of backwards, rubish neanderthals we Americans were because gay marriage still wasn't legal in America back in 2007. Yet Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the United Kingdom etc. only legalized gay marriage less than half a decade ago. The left simply hates America.

  16. The United States is a choice land, and the entire western hemisphere could be considered the same to one degree or another. God himself has declared it to be so. The United States was established by men and women who God held in Heaven until the time that they came to earth to establish this nation. The Constitution of the United States is a document inspired by the God and Father of us all. It is ultimately intended to be used by all nations on this earth. If we as a nation and as a people continue to abort the children that God sends to this nation, we can only hope to reap the wrath of a just God. What this land and all lands and peoples need to do is turn to God and His Son Jesus Christ and earnestly seek to do their will. I know that THAT is something that I need to do more diligently and faithfully.

  18. This example of Western European superiority over the US is not an exception, it’s the rule. Look at nearly every metric in health, education, happiness, efficiency and even many economic metrics and Western Europe (and Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea) outperform the US.

    The idea that the US is “the greatest country in the world” is just a platitude that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny of the data.

  19. Sweden is not a socialist country!!! We have a free market here. The government do not own the means of production here. Why is this so hard for you americans to get inside your heads? The only things that are "socialist" is our casino, pharmacy and the stoor where we buy alcohol. We have private schools, hospitals and other companys. Sweden is a "social-democracy" (its a mix between capitalism and socialism) at best.

Aren't they imposing a view as well? I even said that I totally supporting family planning which is virtually the same as planned parenthood minus the abortion but they reject that cause we know their goal is hideous disguised in the name of rights/freedom, now let me piss off the other side and say same level of idiocy comes from the right on guns.

  22. Oh and for the pro-abortion nuts who says it's a medical procedure, yes I agree, medical procedures come with their own terms/restrictions. In this country, there are restrictions on where/how I can gut fish yet with abortions, so many believe, yeah just allow it upon request, no question asked.

  23. Also, notice that the pro-choice crowds in general use choice as an argument strictly on this issue. They are not for legalizing heavy drugs, prostitution, etc. Now of course these things I mentioned have moral objections and at worst harmful but it can be easily argued that it's the person's choice to associate with them. Seatbelt laws for example is a person's choice but I am fine with the law enforcing it for safety regulations. I really don't understand why in this continent, things that truly trumps liberty gets a pass but things that has to do with safety regulations or a medical procedure that carries a requirement must remain allowed and available upon request. Just beats me.

  24. Abortion is the one or at least the most issues the left are wrong about cause even Western Europe is less pro-abortion rights than US/Canada. Now of course western Europe isn't radically pro-life, of course not, but they see the complexity of this issue whereas the left wing nuts in North America just say it should be absolutely allowed under any case at any stage which is the case already which is insane when you think about it. I mean, in Canada, the conservative candidate mind you voted against a bill that would ban sex selective abortions, you'd think something like sex selective abortions would be opposed even by liberals, yet you have the conservative willingly voting against a bill that would prohibit it, that's how much life is marginalized in North America in the name of choice and all that BS. BTW, for the ppl that says abortion is a woman's body, to what stage do you want to take that statement? So at 14 weeks + of pregnancy when the unborn has head, legs, arms, eyes, ears etc. plus a heartbeat and a seperate DNA, does that sounds like her body or a being inside her body? That's all I can say.

  25. Well said. To view the life of an unborn child with as much value as the kitchen trash, just shows you how progressive Progressives really are. When people realize that life, any life, at any stage, is the most valuable thing on this planet, then we have the building blocks to build a strong society. Unfortunately too many in elected office are content to play with legos instead of real building blocks. On day they will grow old and their co-workers will work just as hard to find a way to have them gently removed from society since they are of no more value. I have seen people express more concern over stray animals than for an unborn child. This must stop.

  26. Partial birth abortion? YEAH, I could HAVE LIVED A SWIMMINGLY NOT EVER KNOWING THAT EXIST IN OUR FALLEN WORLD!!! That's not even an abortion by definition because the babe is outside of the womb!! It is killing a human outside of the womb, so not one of those pro-choice nutjobs can explain this away with comforting words or phrases like it is just a clump of cells or any crap statements like that!! If a human is outside of the womb, there's no way to deny its alive!!!

  28. People critisize Sweden as the most "americanized" liberal on social issues. Different from in west European liberalism. Which is more pro life and less fanatic on when it comes to abortion laws for example and political correctness is less strong. But legalize consensual non pregnancy incest unlike Sweden or USA. But then you have conservative Poland.

  32. In Islam, our teachings tell us that after 12 weeks the unborn is a living being. Abortions are not permissible unless there is a medical reason like the pregnancy is threatening a mother's life or the unborn has very serious health problems. This must be detected before completing 12 weeks. Rape is another reason for abortion but must be before completing 12 weeks. The majority of abortions in the USA are carried out for other reasons besides medical or rape.
