How the Liberal University Hurts the Liberal Student | 5 Minute Video
Are most college professors liberal? Yes, says Penn State Associate Professor of Political Science and Philosophy Matthew Woessner. Perhaps surprisingly, however, his research shows that liberal bias does not seem to influence right-leaning students. Rather, it insulates left-leaning students, hindering their ability to critically analyze their own ideas. In five minutes, learn more about college liberal bias.

Is higher education politically liberal? The answer is clearly, “yes.” In virtually every field within academia, the great majority of professors identify strongly with both leftist causes and the Democratic Party.
Renowned Sociologist Seymour Lipset was one of the first to examine this question. Based on a number of surveys taken since World War II, Lipset concluded that academics are more likely than any other occupational group to identify their views as left or liberal. Professors tend to support a wide variety of egalitarian social and economic policies. They are far more likely to vote for Democratic candidates, and in many cases back leftist third parties. While Lipset based his conclusions on faculty surveys from the 1950s through the early 1980s, more recent studies show that the professoriate’s commitment to leftist politics has only strengthened.
In our book, The Still Divided Academy, my colleagues April Kelly-Woessner, the late Stanley Rothman, and I take an in depth look at faculty views at the beginning of this century. Consistent with earlier studies we find, that a near twelve percent of professors see themselves as Republicans. But even this statistic is deceiving. Among this small minority of faculty who call themselves Republicans, fifty-one percent are pro-choice; sixty three percent support more environmental regulations, even though it could cost people their jobs. And thirty-nine percent of Republicans believe that the government should work to reduce the income gap between the rich and the poor.
So not only are there relatively few Republicans in the ranks of faculty, but many of the Republican professors hold views that are identical to Democrats outside of academia. Based on the best evidence, fewer than one in 10 professors hold conservative social, political, moral, or economic views.
Although college professors are overwhelmingly on the left, there are big differences in the political values of faculty depending on their field. Dan Klein, Professor of Economics at George Mason University, and his colleagues conducted an in-depth study of six academic disciplines: Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. Within these fields, faculty backed the Democratic candidate over Republican candidates by a ratio of 15 to 1. The Left’s advantage was most lopsided in Anthropology and Sociology, where Democratic faculty voters outnumbered Republican voters by approximately 30 to 1. In Political Science faculty support for the Democrats over Republicans runs only 7 to 1 and in Economics the ratio is a mere 3 to 1.

I wonder if you can say that Liberal students are just sheep who follow a leader without questioning where he leads them to
Like what we saw in Germany in 1933-1945
Conservative students are students who think about their choices and will not obey the mainstream when they think the mainstream is going in the wrong direction.
School made me liberal… Then life made me realize academics do not know what's best for everyone.

Isn't it possible that professors are hired based on their qualification. Their political ideology is just a coincidence??
weird how red states are the poorest states
sociology curse is basics the curse of how to be on the left. comunism, gender ideology, feminism, rascism.
In oposition economics is a very right winged study. scarcety, free market, capitalism
The problem is that marx is aproched in history and philosphy as well but IS NOT APROCHED BY THE ECONOMISTS CRITICS OF THE THEORY. So The system basicly says "here is a ideia, comunism" and don't say is realy a bad one by the opinion of many
This video is misleading. In my experience in higher education in Portland, Oregon, I always had conservatives in my classes. Virtually all of my classes. We regularly had active and respectful discussions with both sides of the political aisle being represented.
This video conveys the idea that conservative ideas are just never mentioned nor spoken about and then goes on with how the absence of political discourse restricts those individuals.
I think Matthew needs to log off the internet. It's more than likely he communicates these ideas in his classrooms. Seems like a very dishonest video.
The subjects chosen (social sciences) being dominated by democratic individuals makes total sense when you have figure heads like Jordan Peterson saying these fields shouldn't exist.
just like how uni made someone conservative, the furry fandom made me conservative too
Everyone is born a liberal. To become conservative requires learning about the real world outside of school, being educated in morality, and becoming a mature and responsible adult. These things are learned in the military, but not in liberal arts. The socialist left corrupts the thinking of the young and ignorant to turn them against these necessary qualities and make them unthinking deadbeat activists. Socialism teaches that stealing is righteous, that working for a living is greed, and to blame others for the problems they cause for themselves.
What is to be done with the mass of leftist professors?
We should be teaching how to think, not what to think. I fear that we are losing that with the majority of our Teachers/ Tutors.
WE NEED A TERRORIST ATTACK ON THE BBC.
Before enter the college I was sorta liberal, after two years in college i became a staunch conservative. Bc I realize liberal indoctrination is so awful and wrong.
You people understand that liberalism and leftism are completely unrelated right? Liberalism is FREE MARKET ECONOMY, PERSONAL CHOICE AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, THESE ARE ALL THINGS MY REPUBLICAN FATHER WAS OBSESSED WITH. Do you want some authoritarian to determine what job your child might preform as an adult to benefit his personal corporation? That is the world you people are building, the eradication of choice to the benefit of Neo-federalists, not yourselves. The "right wing" represents the wealthy land/corporate owning class and the "left wing" represents the working blue collar and white collar class. If you take home a paycheck, and do not support leftist concepts you are a class traitor and actively work for your children's future enslavement. WAKE THE F UP SHEEPLE.
Thank you Professor Woessner!
This just shows how unpopular the american conservative politics are, when you are an educated adult.
Higher Education? More like a higher f*cking mess! It's funny because the more history, both in and out of college, the more conservative I've become. Plus, notice how it all happened to move to the left after WWII.
We defeated the wrong enemy. – General George S. Patton.
Had we defeated the communists instead, we could have convinced Franco and Mussolini to turn on Hitler and even the German public because the bulk of the support for the Nazi party was due to a fear of communism. Also, don't mistake Nazism and Fascism for the same ideology. They're distinctly different. Also, he's right on the so-called conservative professors. Even at the "Christian" Evangel University, I was surrounded by cuckservative rules, and two left leaning professors that I couldn't stand.
Is the point of college to expose people to diverse world views? I thought it was to teach them the skills for their future?
I did an electronics engineering degree, and honestly, I couldn't give two tosses what my lecturers political views were.
It’s funny that the most intelligent people at the school almost all believe just giving all our money to the rich isn’t the best play and instead of thinking maybe they are right people really out here like that’s not fair for the people who want to stay ignorant
Thank you
Students pursuing useful degrees such as in engineering or nursing will be less brainwashed than those who pursue useless degrees like Women’s Studies. Don’t waste your money and your kid by sending your kid to college for a useless degree.
Yes cause profs are not stupid
Liberals are hysterically emotional people whose 'opinions' are spoon-fed to them by the fake news & college professors & other hysterical people. They are taught to hate based on skin-color & who you vote for….not once do they ever question it or think for themselves. Ever. You can show them provable facts all day & instead of considering it or researching it they instantly dismiss it as 'conspiracy theory' because they are brain-washed lemmings.
Huh, I wonder why there aren’t many higher education faculties that have a majority of conservative professors
Hey guys. Are the left universities also growing in other continents like Europe?
I can't get over the fact, that you somehow turned "Most educated people disagree with us and even the ones identifying as Republicans don't really support our policies" into "universities are bad and biased"
When i first went to college and saw gender studies was a subject I made fun of it. What is there to study? " "Women have V's and men have P's. Ok class dismissed".
I laughed about it and dismissed it as a useless waste of time discipline. Glad I never took it.
Would love to see some research done to see what would happen if a liberals went to conservative leaning universities.
Well I won't know is why how about do a video on why it's that way and how it got that way
As a former college instructor. I could tell the students by how they wrote papers as to whether they were Democrat or Republican. I found Republican students had a wide view on many topics and could expand their topics because they had more exposure. The Democrat students typical struggled to get a point across, as they limited themselves to only Left winged researchers. Hence, their papers “meat” to validate their topics or research.
Some of them did understand and opened their minds and started to grow. They may not have changed their views, but at least they had a better understanding to what’s really out there.
They conveniently hide our teeth to justify the more than 100 million people killed in the name of communism and socialism… And counting. Not to talk about the billions enslaved still to this day.
How does this study show that professors are purposefully indoctrinating students with liberal values if the results showed that students’ political affiliation remained the same? I currently work in an occupation that is heavily consumed with conservatives/republicans. And I have never been indoctrinated with conservative values. My point being, you can work with and learn from others who hold different values than you, and not be “indoctrinated” with their beliefs. Furthermore, I would argue that Liberals are more progressive than Conservatives and that the ideas and thoughts the stem from the left challenge the way we think as humans, which as you stated in your video is what you believe to be the whole purpose of college.
There's a thing called being a moderate or even a new Republican
