What Matters Most in Life? | 5 Minute Video

What is the most important thing in life? Money? Happiness? Love? Those things are certainly important, but what matters most is good values. What are values? They are what we consider more important than our feelings. For instance, just about everyone feels like eating junk food, but if you eat whatever you feel like eating you will end up obese and unhealthy. So then, what stops people from eating all the food they feel like eating? The answer is good values. Indeed a lack of good values is the root of virtually everything wrong with the world. In five minutes, learn why we should act based on values rather than our feelings.

Script:

I’m going to talk to you about the most important thing you will ever have. Now try to guess what that might be.

For example, is it money? Well it’s certainly better to have money than not to, but it’s definitely not the most important thing you can have — just ask all the rich people who are very unhappy — or, even better, read about most of the people who have won tens of millions of dollars in a lottery. Most of these people actually became less happy, not more.

So alright, then, what about love — is that the most important thing you could ever have? Well, love sure is important. I can’t imagine living without it. I sure treasure the love of my friends and the love of my family, but if you don’t have the thing I’m about to tell you, you won’t receive much love at all.

So, let’s try a third answer: happiness. Well, that, too, is very, very important. Who wants to be unhappy? But again, without the thing I will tell you about, there would be little happiness in the world.

So, here goes — the most important thing you will ever have is — drumroll please — good values. Yes, good values. Now I know that may sound boring and I realize that it’s possible that you may have never really thought about values or even know what I’m talking about.

So, let me explain. A value is something you think is more important than anything else — more important than money, more important even than love, and even more important than happiness. And above all, values are what you consider to be more important than your feelings.

This is very hard for a lot of people to believe because we live in a time when people think that how they feel about something is more important than anything else, but that isn’t so.

Here’s a simple example of the conflict between a feeling and a value. Just about everyone feels like eating junk food, but there’s a big problem here. If you eat whatever you feel like eating you will end up obese and unhealthy. So then, what is it that stops people from eating all the food they feel like eating? The answer is a value — that’s right, a value. And what is that value? Not getting obese and staying healthy.

There is, in other words, a necessary battle that goes on inside of most people: the battle between what they feel–in this case the desire to eat junk food — and a value that they hold — in this case staying healthy and looking good. Now as important as a healthy body is, this conflict between what we feel like doing and values, is even more important when it comes to doing what is right, when it comes to how we treat other people, not just ourselves.

You should rephrase the title to – "What's the most important thing in life to possess or have?" Because the question you posed in the title was not properly answered.

As love is something given, I'm not sure that in terms of something you possess, it's something that you can have. It's hard to articulate. Love is a choice. It is an action. It is something you can choose to do.

Which leaves humility. Humility is the most important thing to have. With it, you'll learn a lot. You'll put others ahead of yourself. You'll work hard. You'll see things for how they really are.

As for what matters most in life? Loving the Lord.

In this instance, it could be philosophically argued that some people value more their dog than a person because are most loyal and loving to them.

I hate people.. I don't value human beings as much as you think we should…. Human beings are wicked nasty and evil.. I would have no regret saving my pet first because my pet is innocent and has never hurt me.., human beings are evil and they know exactly when they are hurting you so if they die let the Lord save them why do I need to be God? I'm not God. .. I have been a nurse for 30 years and taking care of human beings and all they did was treat me like a slave, yelling at me when I'm trying to help them even though sometimes in medical procedures hurt . People have treated me like shit my whole life….. I was raised by narcissists….. people know exactly what they are doing when they hurt you…..so yes I would save my pet!!!!

The problem with this take is all of the exceptions I can find to break it apart. For instance, where do values come from? What are values if not an expression of feelings? And what if you value your nation so much that you fly into sky scrapers in a jet, killing hundreds? PragerU, with all due respect, is presenting a shallow philosophical take in this video.

In the realm where choices entwine betwixt a dog's love and a stranger's fate,

what if the saved (human stranger), in dark's disguise, later unleashed upon loved ones vilest cries?

And what if the stranger saved blossomed into a soul so rare, a beacon of light, pure and bright,
inspiring hearts to spread kindness, heralding change?

But a dog's spirit is not of mere kind; it's akin to human. (A child-like mind)

To fathom its worth, see beyond skin, embrace its soul and light within.

The depth of value is therefore not in breed but in the spirit!
And in the realm of worth, a tender canine, pure and kind, surpasses the wicked souls who revel in their vile desires.

Only time will reveal the better option, a gamble like picking between a mystery box and cash.
The mystery box could hold something extremely valuable, worthless, or even harmful.

you're confusing values with morals. values are much more general than that and doesn't discern wrong from right, it's above ethics. Power for example is a value but somehow society deemed seeking this Power as immoral, independance is a value just like conformity is a value. totally opposite, none is more right then the other, depends of personal choices. Feelings on the other hands are not something to ignore and shut down, they are signals that we should listen to. As always this channel is vomiting dumb shit.

Values are not the most important thing to have in the World. Money is the most important thing as with Money you have the opportunity to purchase excellent Health Care. And also it allows you to provide for your loved ones not necessarily to excess but with enough for them to relax and learn and hopefully practice the good values. Maslow “Laws” are a little out of balance to. The most important thing any of us can really have is AIR because without AIT you are dead in about 90 seconds. Next most important is WATER because without WATER you are dead in about 3 days. Then FOOD because without food you are dead in 15 – 20 days. Interesting that we need money for WATER and FOOD so Money actually logically trumps Water and Food although you can beg for subsistence levels of these things. Next up is Safe Housing or accomodation. This guy did not cover any of this.

… and thanks to this good values you can achieve happiness… Just you need to find right woman who can appreciate it… And that is a problem here, left and liberals corrupted woman souls, they not free or stronger they just less happier than ever in history.

This is the most important question in my opinion,
but the answer to this question is never fixed because humans are fickle and experience hedonic adaption, as Dennis Prager pointed out with lottery winners. The same is true with the loss of vision; initially, people are very upset, but over time they adapt and are no less happy than they were before when they had full vision.
All we know is important things are important and that's it. It's completely relative.
We don't even get to decide how we experience life, or I'd be happy all the time and would never die.

Anyone can resolve for me about the criticism of morality of Nietzsche , that morality is like an impediment to our natural instinct , then therefore should be abandoned or get rid of? I have come across with that idea and I don’t know too much about it , I hope someone can make it clear to me , as opposed to this video

    1. You can lie and save your GFs life… Value of human life, but also a feeling of love for your GF.
    2. You can tell the truth and let your GF die… Value of not lying… nothing else
