Often a president who appears pitiful is actually merely plain awful. And since he is a president, his catastrophe is also the country’s.

That was true of Warren Harding, the 29th president of the United States.

Harding was possibly the most misinterpreted and least valued of all America’s chief executives.

Born in 1865 in a little Ohio town midway between Cleveland and Columbus, Harding was a brave and unusual politician.

He didn’t begin as a politician. He invested most of his life as the editor and publisher of an Ohio paper, the Marion Star. Harding ran unsuccessfully for guv in 1910 and then effectively for senator in 1914.

In the governmental election year of 1920, Harding was considered a dark horse at finest. nevertheless he emerged after 10 tallies as the Republicans’ alternative. He definitely looked and even acted the part. high, with thick white hair and deep, penetrating eyes, Harding was as genial as he was good-looking. To understand him was to like him.

And Americans simulated him. He won the 1920 election in a landslide, gathering an amazing 60% of the popular vote.

The nation that Warren Harding and his running mate Calvin Coolidge obtained handled numerous crises.

To win World War I, the federal government had in fact taken control of big sectors of the economy.

What works in war, does not continuously operate in peace.

There was an inflation crisis:

Prices for fundamental needs like milk and butter increased at disconcerting rates. Rates that companies invested for products doubled.

There was a tax crisis: Corporate taxes were so heavy that business could not expand.

There was a labor crisis: Tens of thousands of Americans, many handicapped, returned from Europe to discover a stagnant economy short of tasks.

Angry workers installed violent strikes.

And, there was a government debt crisis, an outcome of war costs.

By 1920, it appeared that life in crisis was the new regular.

Absolutely not, stated Harding.

Harding guaranteed to end the war laws and rules, to let the nation go back to the approach things were before the war.

He desired commonsense life, the kind that had really made it possible for Henry Ford to start his vehicle company.

” America’s present need,” Harding stated, “is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, however normalcy …”.
