There are two contemporary narratives of the Trump era. According to one, the 45th and 47th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, is a right-wing autocrat who aspires to end the American republic. According to the other, he is saving the republic from left-wing extremism. Which version is more accurate? Sir Niall Ferguson, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford, explores this question.

Donald Trump: The MAGA President
Presented by Niall Ferguson,

One day in the future, historians will be struck by the contrast between two contemporary narratives of the Trump era.

According to one narrative, the forty-fifth and forty-seventh president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was a modern-day Caesar—an autocrat who, by ignoring constitutional constraints, aspired to end the American republic.

According to the other narrative, this same man was a courageous tribune of the people who, by taking on corrupt and predatory elites, saved the republic.

Which version is right?

Let’s find out.

Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York City, the son of a successful real estate developer.

After graduating from the Wharton School, Trump joined the family firm. A high-stakes risk-taker, Trump’s towers, casinos, and resorts generated remarkable quantities of cash, debt, and litigation, not to mention publicity.

In 2004, the risk-taker gambled on a second career—as the host of the “reality” TV show The Apprentice. It made Trump a star.

But it was his third career as a politician that ultimately made Trump the most famous person in the world.

On June 16, 2015, Trump announced that he was seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency. Few people took him seriously. He had dabbled in politics before but had never run for any political office.

Yet Trump struck a chord with his attacks on illegal immigration from Mexico and unfair trade with China. His unvarnished, unscripted style inspired a new populist political movement with the slogan “Make America Great Again”—MAGA. While the coastal elites had benefited from globalization, many Americans felt left behind. In this brash billionaire, with his viral tweets, they found a champion.

The pundits and pollsters forecast victory for the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

They were wrong.

True, Clinton won the popular vote, but Trump won the vote that mattered, the Electoral College: 304 to 227.

A fractious coalition between his campaign team, the Republican establishment, and a succession of generals and businessmen, Trump’s first administration often seemed chaotic. But in terms of Trump’s core objectives, it was highly successful.

On the campaign trail, he had promised to build a “big, beautiful wall” on the nation’s southern border. He succeeded metaphorically. In 2017, in just his first year as president, apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border dropped to a 46-year low.

Thanks to Trump’s tax cuts and deregulation, real median household income rose significantly for the first time since 1999—by 10% between 2016 and 2019.

When Trump took office, the Islamic State terrorist organization had overrun large parts of Syria and Iraq. Within two years, it was effectively wiped out.

The Abraham Accords that Trump negotiated represented a geopolitical breakthrough in relations between Israel and the Arab countries.

And by imposing tariffs, Trump pressured China into a trade deal that began to address the economic imbalances between the two countries.

Yet to his opponents, Trump was a would-be dictator. The Democrats even claimed he was a pawn of Russian President Vladimir Putin. When that charge could not be substantiated, the Democrats impeached Trump on the ground that he had pressured Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden. The Senate acquitted Trump.

I even predicted back in 2016 that if the Donald won the presidency, he would make the second Bush presidency look like a walk in the park. Guess what, I was right! I even knew he was going to be the worst president since James Buchanan and it's already happened then and again now. He's just going to be another second term curse president, and I pray that the Democrats win control of both houses next November!

Trump is the savior of the Republic. As someone who loved Ronald Reagan Trump has become the best president of my lifetime thank God for him and his family. Unfortunately, the Democrats went from being Democrats to being socialist communist and anarchist. The political violence has come primarily from the left.

Or option 3: As a narcissistic, petty, and corrupt man who used his position to enrich himself and in so doing destroyed the global economy and turned the us into a backwater. A man who only cared about himself and scammed a whole nation into voting for him twice.

It's the economy. It's always about the economy. (Isn't that a theme that runs through Nail's books?) We're witnessing a repeat of the Roaring '20s (when the Republican oligarchy controlled the economy, Congress, and the White House), the Great Depression (which occurred on the Rublicans' watch), and the New Deal (which won for the Democrats the Congress, and the presidency in the five consecutive elections following the onset of the Depression). By the way, instead of lowering taxes on the rich (trump's one big beautiful bill) the Democrats raised them the (Revenue Act of 1935), which introduced a progressive "Wealth Tax" with rates up to 75% on the highest incomes. During the 1920s, the Revenue Acts of 1924, 1926, and 1928, under Republican administrations, had favored the rich. History is repeating. We never learn from it, we only repeat it. The question is, indeed, what will come of it this time.

What makes you think the Covid-19 pandemic wasn't a tool of his opponents? Instead of looking closely at the situation, pull back and look at the satellite view of things over a 10 year period starting before his inauguration. Things look greatly different.

When I first voted in 1996, I always voted for the Democratic Candidate because the Republican didn't relate to me. But in 2016 it was the first time I voted for an Independent, Gary Johnson, because I didn't trust Hilary or Trump. But once I saw Trump was keeping his promises and the economy was growing, he became the first Republican I voted for. Now Trump isn't perfect, but he's doing what he's supposed to be doing and is winning in many things. Let just keep him in our prayers and pray that he doesn't fall into the temptation of being a dictator.

Good summary, though I don't like the narrative that people felt they being "left behind", that's a common trope to try to explain a generalised point of view often used by intellectuals. I think people were just sick of the dishonesty (politicians would say one thing but do another), and the progress achieved by previous administrations that weren't progress at all, instead they made things worse. In the end, I think Trump's messaging was better that previous admins and he did what he said and to top it off he was intentionally not politically correct. People are tired of that, just tell it like it is.

These videos are always comically poorly researched. At the time stamp 1:33 they claim Trump had never run for a political office before in 2015. Of course, Trump did run for President in 2000 also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump_2000_presidential_campaign.

Couple of points about Jan 6 which could have been made better: There were actually 2 crowds on that day, the rally crowd Trump spoke to at the Ellipse, and 1.5 miles away the crowd already at the Capitol, who were the ones who actually staged the minor riot. By the time the Ellipse crowd to whom Trump actually spoke got there, windows had already been broken, and the majority of this Capitol crowd were being peacefully conducted and accompanied around the Capitol building by Capitol Police officers. The rally crowd joined in the peaceful wandering about the halls, looking in on offices, etc. Some just stepped inside the outer doors, glanced around and walked out. Dems jailed those for months without charges.

More Jan 6 facts: There were only a couple of 'hot spots' on Jan 6, from the few protestors who broke windows and a door, and some protestors outside the Speaker's Lobby, where USAF veteran Ashli Babbitt became the only person to die on that day from the protest itself, shot by a Capitol Police officer. There were 3 other protestors who also died that day (1 from drugs, 1 heart attack, 1 stroke). Also 5 police officers whom Democrats claim to have died from the protest, none of whom died on that day but after, 4 from suicide, 1 from stroke. There was one highly-publicized officer death touted by Democrats, who claimed he was bashed in the head by a protestor with a fire extinguisher, but this story was debunked.

In terms of weapons, no protestors, so-called 'insurrectionists' by the Left, actually had any firearms. Only Babbitt was wounded and died by gunshot from the panicked officer. This stands in stark contrast to real insurrections, which are usually conducted by armed insurrectionists. Of all those charged with crimes in the aftermath, none were for the crime of insurrection. Zero.

Who controls the past now controls the future. Who controls the present now controls the past. Maybe the MSM narrative now is being defeated but on down the road it will all depend on who controls the algorithm. That's why now no matter what he does you won't find much if anything good said by the talking heads.

Actually, Caesar was a savior of the Republic. A small handful of senators plotted against him, but looking back on the policies enacted and political actions taken, many historians have claimed that what Caesar did unilaterally either was or would have benefited the Republic in both the short and long term. When Augustus rose victorious from the civil war following Caesar's assination, Augustus ended up enacting policies similar to his uncle and adopted father, Julius Caesar…
