Thomas Spoehr serves as director of Heritage’s Center for National Defense where he is responsible for supervising research on matters involving U.S. national defense. Prior to joining Heritage, Spoehr served for over 36 years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant General. He is an expert on national defense policy and strategy, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on defense strategy, budgets and equipment modernization. Spoehr’s articles and commentary have been published widely in both civilian and military media and he is often called upon to provide expert commentary and analysis.

"By nearly every measure of force structure — the number of brigades, aircraft, ships and subs, Marine battalions, and end strength, is smaller than when the [post-9/11] buildup began," wrote budget expert Todd Harrison of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "Yet this smaller force consumes a budget more than 50 percent larger in real terms than before 9/11. The military is spending more on a smaller force." $596 billion 2015/2016. In the 2017 fiscal year, which began under President Barack Obama and extended into Trump’s term, $606 billion was spent on defense. In the 2018 fiscal year, that number was $670.6 billion.
    The 2019 fiscal year saw $685 billion enacted for defense. And for the 2020 fiscal year, Trump signed a bill in December — three months after the fiscal year began — that authorized $738 billion for the Pentagon which in real terms is an increase of 5.1% over 2015/2016 budget. Hardly a resounding "support" of the military.

  8. I'm a USN and Vietnam veteran and we need to be strong, we need a strong military to keep the peace. It's clear China is the enemy, they've declared war on the US and now it is perfectly clear they are a threat. Defeat China by boycotting them!

  10. Firstly, you must fight and win coronavirus in USA. If you failed, china or Russia absolutely wins USA economically, and military without sending their troops or Dropping ICBM on US troops. A severe economic loses will simply weakens US military to a great degree. There would be chaos in US cities. Internal conflicts cause more damages in USA.   16. You guys are nuts. Always more money for military spending. Yes we need to get ready for Russia and China bc that war is coming in just a few years.
    Also we need to provide for the civil defense and pandemic preparation should be a part if it. But you guys need to pull troops back home and stop wasting money on stupid dream projects and get busy prepping the country and civilians for the coming Great War.
    I know you guys care nothing for the general civil defense. We tax payers know that we are on our own when the next real war starts. But you guys could at least act like you give a damn about the civilians.
    You guys have to restructure and get ready ASAP bc war with China is just around the corner.

  17. The military sucks enough wealth out of America, so why did America screw this Cv thing up so badly? The cost of one or two aircraft carriers could have covered the cost of the medical costs of a lot of this pandemic.
