The mass shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Southern California on November 7, 2018 is a tale of males and masculinity.
Lost in the carnage is a lesson we would all be encouraged to hearken. That lesson has little to do with the monster who took lives and whatever to do with the men who saved lives.
The killer was 28 years of ages, lost, lonesome and living with mother.
He had been a regular at the Borderline Bar and Grill. He knew that on Wednesdays– college nation night– the place would be loaded with kids laughing and dancing. He went into tossing smoke grenades, then unloaded his pistol– fitted with a prohibited prolonged magazine– into the crowd.
There were other young men there, too. In interviews, Wennerstrom looks like a normal college student– backwards baseball cap, gray T-shirt, jaw scruffy with a few days’ development.
As soon as he heard the shots, Wennerstrom informed ABC News, he understood “precisely what was going on.” He and some buddies got everyone they could and pressed them down behind the swimming pool table, putting their own bodies on top of the women. One lady, who was commemorating her 21st birthday, informed Good Morning America: “There were several males who got on their knees and pretty much obstructed everybody with their back towards the shooter, all set to take a bullet for every single one of us.”
When the shooter paused to reload, Wennerstrom grabbed a bar stool and tossed it through a window. He and his friends pulled 30 to 35 people to safety. After getting each group safely to the parking area, Wennerstrom and his friends went back for more.
A reporter asked Wennerstrom how he understood right away what was going on in the loud, congested bar. “I’m here to protect my pals, my family, my fellow human beings, and I know where I’m going if I pass away, so I was not worried to sacrifice.
This is the masculinity we so typically hear denigrated. It takes as its task the physical security of others, specifically women. This masculinity doesn’t await spoken authorization or invitation to push a person out of harm’s way.
And it sent out Sgt. Ron Helus of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office hurrying into Borderline Bar and Grill, where the shooter was waiting for him. “I got ta go handle a call,” Helus had just informed his wife over the phone.
