Participation trophies.
I’m not a fan.
They’re bad for kids. Bad for moms and dads. Bad for society.
Aside from that, they’re alright.
If there was a sport to be played, I played it. And never when did any person ever inform me that winning was not important or that showing up was all that mattered.
Today, kids get a various message. Losing? No huge deal. Appearing? That is worthy of a trophy. Wow. What a dreadful thing to tell a kid. Happy my moms and dads or coaches never stated it to me. If they had, I’m sure I never ever would’ve become a pro soccer gamer.
Let me tell you why.
In high school, I was a great soccer player. I thought I might play soccer in college. Looking back, though, I just wasn’t sufficient in those college coaches eyes.
I checked out for the UCLA team as a walk-on. I made it! I was vindicated. I had actually arrived … on the bench. The coach hardly ever took a look at me. I’m not even sure he knew my name. I understand he didn’t appreciate my sensations. I wanted to be a starter, I wanted to be a winner. Should not I have been satisfied simply for making the group? Of course not. That’s absurd.
However isn’t that what kids are told today? You’re a winner. Even if you’re not. Even if you can be found in last. And we’ll give you a prize … just for showing up, simply for participating.
This belief– that appearing is an achievement– is self-destructive. Because the pain of losing is part of what drives one to improve.
The aggravation of going to video game after game and resting on the bench drove me nuts. I needed to practice more. I needed to work more difficult. Or, I needed to give up. And I didn’t want to give up.
This taught me an important lesson: If you do not put in the work, you will not get ahead. And not getting ahead? Well, that feels dreadful. So, put in the work. Or go home.
I put in the work. I pushed myself, not to do my best– because who can potentially know what “their best” is?
Coach put me in the video game. Not due to the fact that I wanted so severely to play, but because he needed me. I played well.
The roadway to triumph– in sports, in organization, in life– is paved with losses, unpleasant losses. Losses that can hurt so much it’s difficult to breathe. Any professional athlete or effective business owner will tell you that’s true.
