I have no self-confidence.

I’m not stating I dislike myself, or that I have an issue with my self-image. And I don’t have low self-esteem. I’m just stating that I have no self-esteem at all.

Why? For the very same reason that I have no family pet unicorns. Self-confidence is a fantasy. It’s a worthless fabrication that exists only in your imagination.

The dictionary defines “esteem” by doing this: “To regard with affection.” Self-confidence, therefore, indicates to concern yourself with affection. Is that how we should see ourselves?

If someone asked you who you admire, would you really wish to answer, “Well, I appreciate myself”? Would that be a good thing?

I would state no … emphatically.

I was barely a precocious kid, but I believe I recognized this “self-confidence” thing was a racket as far back as junior high. I remember when the guidance counselor at my school handed out a worksheet and asked us to “rate” our self-confidence on a scale of 1 to 10.

In any case, there we were, facing the crucial job of arbitrarily measuring our egos. When I asked my instructor why I need to have high self-confidence, she stated, “Because you’re unique.” When I asked why I was unique, she said, “Because you’re you!”

I discovered this an odd statement at the time, coming as it was from the woman who had actually just offered me a D on my last math quiz. The majority of my schoolmates, though, rapidly wrote down 10s and nines. Incidentally, a few of them would grow up to be jobless alcoholics, however I’m thinking if they could take that test once again, they ‘d score themselves exactly the very same.

See, that’s the entire point of self-confidence: to be pleased with yourself even when there’s no reason to be pleased with yourself.

Of course, apologists will claim that self-confidence is simply about confidence, which you require confidence to prosper in life. Okay. If self-confidence is simply about confidence, then why do not we simply call it “confidence”?

Because confidence should be earned.

A trainee is positive about succeeding on a test if he studies for it. A professional athlete is positive on the field if he practices. A vocalist is confident in her capabilities if she, in fact, has capabilities.

Self-confidence, on the other hand, can be defined as “unearned confidence.” The person with “high self-confidence” (likewise referred to as a “narcissist”) feels excellent about himself on the basis of absolutely nothing. We may ask him: “Why do you respect yourself?” And his learned action will be: “Because I’m me.”

Like a contemporary Narcissus, he can’t see the world outside the window since he’s too busy whispering sweet nothings to his reflection in the glass.
