” … The police are my good friends!” an elderly person blurted out in the middle of a police-community conference I attended in the South Bronx..

I’ve heard variations on this style dozens of times from the obedient homeowners of high-crime neighborhoods. These hard-working individuals don’t loathe the police– quite the opposite. They comprehend what many seem to have actually forgotten or never understood: Police invest most of their time in minority communities– that is, primarily black neighborhoods– because that is where innocent individuals are most being hurt by violent street criminal activity.

To put it plainly: Police go where the criminal activity is..

In the 75 biggest U.S. counties, about 60% of burglary and murder defendants are black, although blacks consist of only 15% of the population in those counties.

In New York City, blacks comprise 73% of all shooting victims, though they are 23% of the city’s population. In Chicago in 2016, there were 4,300 shooting victims—- almost all black. Amongst the 2 dozen victims under the age of 12 was a three-year-old, shot on Father’s Day, who is now incapacitated for life, and a ten-year-old, shot on Labor Day, whose pancreas and spleen were ripped apart.

This is the reality that authorities leaders in metropolitan locations deal with every day. And every day, they get calls from obedient people in high-crime neighborhoods, asking for assistance.

Are the cops buddy or opponent? Are they participating in an epidemic of deadly racist violence, as we so typically hear?

In 2019, the authorities eliminated 235 blacks, most of them dangerous or armed, out of 1,004 police shooting victims in general. That 25% ratio is really less than what the black criminal activity rate would forecast, since police shootings are a function of the rate at which officers come across violent suspects.

What about the unarmed victims of fatal cops shootings?

Since June 1, 2020, the Washington Post’s database of deadly cops shootings in 2019 showed 9 unarmed black victims and 19 unarmed white victims of fatal authorities shootings. By contrast, about 7,500 blacks die of criminal homicide a year.

You understand about George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, however what about Tony Timpa? In 2016, three Dallas police officers held the handcuffed Timpa, a white male, on the ground for 13 minutes with a knee to his back while he advocated help. His death was ruled a homicide, triggered by the officers’ physical restraint and by cocaine.

The point here is not to validate authorities misconduct, but to rebut the claim that doubtful tactics take place only– or perhaps disproportionately– in the case of black suspects. Indeed, it is early to conclude that the killing of George Floyd was a product of racial animus at all, as opposed to bad training and the officer’s unsuited temperament.

Ideally, officers would take nobody’s life in the course of their tasks. In light of the number of arrests that officers make each year– around 10 million– and the number of fatal weapons attacks on officers– 27 a day– it is not clear that 1,000 civilian deaths, the huge bulk happening in the face of potentially lethal attack, reveal a law enforcement occupation that is out of control.

Can police approaches be enhanced? What won’t help is defunding police companies. Officers in depleted departments who can not get back-up when they face unsafe suspects will be even more stressed out and more at risk of making bad choices.
