The War On Cars | 5 Minute Video
There is a war against cars in America. Regulators want Americans out of cars and onto trains, buses, and bicycles. Why? Because of what cars represent — freedom. Automotive expert Lauren Fix (“The Car Coach”) explains.

We may be witnessing the death of America’s car culture.
And it’s not dying of old age.
People are still buying lots of cars. But there’s been a concerted push by government bureaucrats and environmentalists to transform car ownership from a source of pride to a source of guilt.
Ever since Henry Ford built the Model T, cars have been central to the American experience. That’s because cars are more than just another way to get from point A to point B.
They allow us to go wherever we want, whenever we want, with whomever we want. Think about it: with trains, planes, and buses, the routes are planned and the schedule is timed. Only cars allow you to be spontaneous. When you get behind the wheel, you are in control. You are free.
The very reason people love cars – personal freedom — is also why regulators can’t stand them. Government – at all levels – craves control. And when it comes to your car, they want you off the road. So do the environmentalists with whom they have made common cause.
This antagonism toward America’s car culture can be traced back to the 1970s. In response to the Arab Oil Embargo in the early part of that decade, Congress passed national fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks. These standards, known as CAFE (short for Corporate Average Fuel Economy), forced automakers to increase fuel efficiency.
Rather than let the free market decide what kind of cars customers wanted to buy, the government decided to do the dictating. Their regulations have cost car companies and consumers many billions of dollars. But in the last decade or so, the government’s heavy hand has come down harder than ever.
Beginning in 2009, the Obama administration sought to dramatically increase CAFE requirements. These Obama-era standards make cars more expensive—around $4,000 per new vehicle, according to economists Salim Furth and David Kreutzer. This prices millions of middle-class families out of the new car market.
The regulations also encourage the production of smaller, lighter cars, that are generally less safe than larger, heavier ones. The laws of physics are tough to argue with!
To make matters worse, the new CAFE standards push automakers to produce more electric cars, a lose-lose for consumers and, ironically, the environment as well.
Consumers lose because, according to a study from the consulting firm Arthur D. Little, electric vehicles cost significantly more to operate over their lifetime than comparable gasoline-powered cars — around $20,000 more. And the environment loses because electric vehicles produce three times as much toxic pollution as gas powered ones when you factor in the mining of rare earth minerals that electric car batteries require. And this doesn’t include the environmental consequences involved in ultimately disposing of these batteries.
Adding insult to injury, a typical electric car gets fewer than 100 miles per charge and can take 4 to 8 hours to fully charge the battery. So much for the freedom of the open road. Maybe that explains why consumers have shown scant interest in these cars, despite hefty government subsidies and privileges.

My city just opened the next chunk of a metro line. The metro can go across the CBD in 3 minutes, to a major area in 15 minutes and trains come every 5 minutes. And it costs me about US$1 for a short ride.
That’s freedom. Not sitting on a huge concrete freeway in a metal box with a thousand other metal boxes going at high speed. Car cucks are insufferable, please become trainpilled I’m begging you
Bruh so you guys dont want to build public transit for those who want it? Thats limiting freedom and you can drive a car if you want but I want to ride the train
After finding out I need a new starter today, on top of having my brakes, and alternator replaced, AND needing new tires, AND needing the emissions system fixed so I can finally pass an emissions test so I can get my license renewed, I wish I could downvote this video a MILLION TIMES!
Also, wth is a "car coach"?
Reminder that prageru is funded by oil oligarchs
Dumb bitch. You know nothing about cars when you talk about Car culture. Shove yourself in to a turbocharger please.
Absolute nonsense
When you're piled with having to replace the alternator, new tires, brakes, and getting the emissions system fixed so you can pass an emissions test- or you're screwed- doesn't sound like freedom to me. In fact it's more like prison!
comments are just urban 20 somethings too scared to drive
Nothing says "explorer" like rolling through a designated patch of asphalt.
Did you know that people prefer to live next to livable and walkable areas than to a giant urban freeway or an huge parking spot
people die from cars
There's plenty of intelligent rebuttals already so… boooooo you guys suck
The word "freedom" has been warped so much that people think cars (and by extension, the traffic system) are a libertarian thing.
0:28 theres a reason cars took off, convenience. Then they became inconenient through congestion, which lead to streetcars being pulled up.
On top of that, sure. They allow you precise location, but transport used to be able to do something similar until again, the tracks got pulled.
On top of that, planned routes is required for trains and busses to work. If they were not planned, public transport would be even worse. Theres a REASON people in my area flock to the light rails when the state fair pops up. They dont wanna drive on 635 which is the opposite of freedom. Light rail can be networked to serve direct access to major events like the texas state fair.
1:07 very rich from a big oil funded oeganization. The government was held back by car manufacturers and lobbies. Environmentalists are not always the brightist, but this doesn't mean anything against public transport which is more efficient energy wise. getting people out of the car will save road maintenance costs as well as reduce congestion. It isnt big government, its big oil against public transit.
Furtherly, cafe was a good move from the government. Leaving it up to the "free market" doesn't work. Otherwise we eould still have complex streetcar networks that may have been upgraded rather than stripped to make room for drivers. Governmentsl regualtions on fuel efficiency will dk the job better than the "free market" when the free market slready failed us. Furtherly, prive capping rxists since efficient fuel shouldnt be expensive, corperations only jack the price up out of spite. So we need REGULATIONS.
I agree with this woman when she says that larger, heavier cars are safer! That's why I advocate for making massive cars that can accomodate dozens of people at once. Not only does this make them safer, it cuts down on polution and saves space!
We can even make extra big cars that pulls other big cars with them. Thus, they can collectively accomodate hundreds of people at once!
Out of all the dumb PU videos, this is still one of the dumbest I've ever run across. I mocked the crap out of it every time I was stuck in traffic, crawling inch by inch just to get stuck at the next red light. I would literally start talking to myself out of frustration in my car "look at all this effing freedom!" 🙄
Now, on my bus every morning going to work, I literally pass thousands of cars "freedoming" on their way into NY, while my "socialist/Marxist/communist" bus riding behind is sleeping, listening to music or playing a game on my phone and not pulling my hair out and yelling at the a-h0le who just cut me off trying to get into the exit lane when he was right behind me not a half a mile ago 😡
This video was really memorable just because of how dumb it is.
“Cars make America more free” when they are pretty much mandatory because our entire infrastructure built to support cars makes everything spread so far apart that it’s practically impossible to get anywhere without a car.
Love how everyone is arguing about this matter. It doesnt have to be all public transport or all cars, this is one of the issues where there can be compromise. Lower speed limits to 40 kph in cities and build more underground metros. It provides alternative transport options when you are drunk or cannot drive. In america there are many states where there is basically no public transport and u need a car to survive. In many european cities car ownership is at similar level to the USA, but they arent so dangerous because good urban planning has narrowed the roads and implemented traffic calming to improve pedestrian safety. Also what does cars and socialism have anything to do with each other lmao.
"The War on Exercise"
FTFY fatasses. Americans are so fat they could use a walk or bike ride more often.
Biased ass philosophy. shit video :/
00:02 It's more like the passenger railway culture that has died in late 1950s.
Am I the only around here who came here, thanks to Adam Something?
Car : requires hundreds of dollars in licensing and insurance every month
Usually can only go on roads
Can only be kept in specific, dedicated places between uses
At the mercy of gas companies for fuel price and of the government for road maintenance
Need to buy a new one every few years or spend thousands in maintenance due to how quickly they degrade
Car-centric infrastructure leaves no other practical choice but using your car
Can you remind me again why cars are the so-called ultimate symbol of freedom?
2:15 Yep. This is anti-car propaganda. Nobody is this stupid
Nothing says freedom like not being able to get groceries, go to school, go to work, go to the doctor, go on vacation, or visit friends, without a car.
Good points. Think of all the things the Biden Administration is against: They don't want you to own a car. They oppose your right to own a gun for self defense. They make it harder for you to buy your own home. They oppose school choice. They want to debase your wages through immigration and free trade so you will depend on government subsidies for survival. Everything is about control. This is really communism creeping in to our society. Wake up before it is too late.
