What’s the best way to help poor people escape poverty?
Progressives and conservatives have very different answers to this question, but before we explore those answers, let’s agree on this:
Both progressives and conservatives believe that the government has a moral obligation to help those who, through bad luck or unfortunate circumstances, can’t help themselves.
Here’s what a conservative icon, Nobel Prize-winning economist, Frederic Hayek, said on the subject:
“There is no reason why, in a society that has reached the general level of wealth ours has attained, the first kind of security should not be guaranteed to all…some minimum of food, shelter, and clothing sufficient to preserve health and the capacity to work.”
Whatever the media might tell you, there isn’t a conservative out there who would not agree with Hayek’s statement.
As I have documented in my book, Who Really Cares, when it comes to philanthropy and charitable giving, conservatives actually out-give progressives — by a lot.
Where the two sides disagree is on the role the government plays – not in protecting the poor from poverty, but in lifting them out of it.
Here’s a disturbing piece of data: On balance, since President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty programs came fully online in 1966, the poverty rate in America has hardly budged.
That rate, as computed by the United States government, was 14.7 percent in 1966.
And today?
It’s 13.5 percent.
The rate has fluctuated a few points up and down over the decades. The net result is just one percentage point of progress. And this is after the government has spent over 20 trillion dollars on poverty relief programs.
20 trillion dollars – the current size of the US debt — and the needle has barely moved.
Now, it’s true that the official poverty rate doesn’t measure consumption. Certainly, poor people today have many more things than poor people did in 1970.
Across all income levels, including the poor, Americans are likely to have cell phones, air conditioners, flat screen TVs, computers and a car. And life expectancy has lengthened considerably thanks to overall improvements in health care.
But it demeans poor people to say that this material progress makes poverty less of a problem. Our goal should never be to merely make poverty less miserable for people. Our goal must be to make poverty more escapable.
Many progressives offer a straightforward solution: more funding for poverty programs. They believe that we need to transfer more wealth – through government taxation — from people who have money to people who don’t. This is the income inequality argument.

Basically what this video says republicans want worker drones who work for just barely get by but get them for as cheap as possible. Progressives wants them oppressed and on it to control them. Both are bad as big corporations don’t want to give their workers any of the earned wages they helped them get. Dems just don’t wanna lose control.
The nuclear family that has 2 incomes. Single motherhood incentives from democrats have pushed fathers out of the home. We’ll give you a check if you keep men out of your house.
Weak unprincipled compromise. As Henry Hazlitt explains in Economics in One Lessons, more Government Jobs (that are typically less effective) simply means fewer Private Jobs (that are typically more effective). No need for government to be involved in ANY welfare.
What i find hilarious about all this is these speakers dont care about the impoverished
in my opinion, as a leftist, we do not focus enough on education, like in universities or colleges. we can get more educated people are capable of self reliance along with a little bit of help from the government from welfare systems
"Workfare" when you need to have a job to be able to get welfare which started with bill Clinton, has been shown to be a resounding failure. Shown by the rise of homelessness and people even on said workfare living paycheck to paycheck, maybe instead of demonizing people who are down on their luck we give them a home and 2k a month to get them through the day.
So let's finish Prager's video for them… they can't think that's the end of the story.
Step 1. Stop giving able bodied people welfare without requiring, part time work, volunteering, schooling etc… I agree, but that's not "THE END" you morons… I swear the propaganda at Prager is insufferable. so to tell the rest of the story
Step 2. Get money out of politics: or u can't do step 3
Step 3. Overhaul the broken tax code or you can't continue to step 4. Simply raising taxes is uninformed if u read Arthur Laffer.
Step 4. Overhaul public education and teach valuable skills
Step 5. Invest in law enforcement to make low income areas safer for those trying to escape poverty rather than turning to the streets, breaking up families etc. (NOT A WAR ON DRUGS)
Step 6. Antitrust enforcement
Step 7.Bring back manufacturing
That's the short answer… tell me if I'm wrong or missed stuff like Prager did… I had explanations but it kept getting deleted and was too long, so I'm not rewriting them at the moment unless someone asks…which no one will… no one will read this…
Landlords just raise rent whenever income goes up. It’s an economic rent ensuring people stay impoverished. We need a Land Value Tax to ensure land owners can’t capture all the economic benefit of societal progress
I should have known a 5 minute video to solving poverty was impossible… no answers here.
As a moderate progressive, i was really hoping to agree with prager for the first time here. But they didnt even have an answer…
i was really hoping to get the capitalist solution here… but they have no plan either… there was no solution
Work n save
Nice suit and tie… But problem is still there 😆😆😆😆
Here’s a radical concept – how about EDUCATING!!!! younger folks to STOP having so much irresponsible sex producing an endless amount of kids they didn’t intend to have and that everyone else has to pay for!!!!!
Update
0:34 hayek was not a conservative, he was a libertarian
The road out of poverty is to stop being so conservative. Mississippi's and Alabama's poverty is connected to it's conservative ideas
Prager U judges hard work by success? Who knew?
The fact is a great number of government workers depend on the Welfare programs to keep going for there middle class and above careers.
This is the problem by creating government.
Even the military budget shrinks as need and will require less people and resources and that is a world wide department unlike the federal welfare program that is national.
The other issue is Welfare as a sustainable program benefits strictly the Democrat party as the Republicans believe Charity has proven to be more efficient at providing outreach to those in need as there purpose is not tied to well payed government wages and benefits.
It is also a free choice to give to a charity unlike a government program that just takes like a mindless robot.
I see Federal Welfare as not Well for those on it and not Fair to those being taxed especially as many single working people are struggling themselves.
The real Rich vs Poor is millions of well payed Government workers vs the Private sector workers who keep struggling paying more taxes for programs that are horribly mismanaged year after year.
It's the complicated nature of the system that's the problem if you were to cut out the middle man and simply give people the money it would work better.
Who could possibly be against anti-poverty?
You like people being poor?
And so, over the last 50 years, the US government has spent more than 16 TRILLION DOLLARS in its war against poverty…
So, how well is that working? Not well. It’s fuelled generational welfare dependency and economic resentment.
Trillions of dollars and the needle has scarcely moved.
When Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty, the rate was 19 percent. We now have a 15 percent poverty rate.
Need it be said, America’s poor live lives of the comfortable middle class by global standards.
In 1964, children in poverty was at 23 percent. Now? It’s 22 percent.
This has been a wasteful disaster, fomenting nothing but resentment, dependency and social apathy.
Tax the rich? The rich currently pay the vast majority of taxes. These taxes inevitably slow economic growth, decrease actual tax revenue and hurt the working poor.
Please check out my book “Deconstructing Social Justice”. I promise you, you’re in for more than a few surprises!
Welfare should be temporary
What this doesnt consider is what happens when the housing in an area becomes difficult even for the middle and upper class to afford? And job wages dont go up for those groups but inflation rises? What if the generation is charged probably double the rate for housing, 6 times the rate for health care and triple the rate for education? Then people at the bottom dont have the same desire to jump to the middle bc the middle class people r slipping to the bottom more than the reverse?
The increased food stamps is because 2008 destroyed so many peoples lives
Imagine slaving for literal pennies that's barely enough to survive on….I LOVE the welfare life
How can anyone be against this?
It is simple, abolish money.
No money = no poverty
Its scary how simple things that actually solve problems almost half of the West can't understand. The LEFT half
The Government Party… Yee Haw… Where did all the money go? Where did my Standard of Living Go? Phoof… just like your "Rights" they are GONE!
John Adams 1826 – “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt.”
Another Government FAILURE! So What is going to Change? Red Team… then Blue Team… then Red Team… Do the Government Hokey Pokey and let your Government Spin you around.

We once suffered from Criminals committing crimes, now we suffer from Psychopath Control Freak Government Agents making Laws to Control every aspect of your life and Violating the Constitution! BTW… the Ruling Class is Exempt and protected from most laws… they make the Laws to benefit themselves.

In my opinion, the best way to get people out of poverty is Universal Basic Income. It would be a government program where every month every citizen would receive a certain amount of money, maybe $2000. There would be no strings attached. Then people in poverty could use the money to better their situation and get hopefully get out of the cycle of poverty. This would also help boost the economy because people would have more disposable money. Ofc, this money wouldn’t just be printed into existence (because then there would be inflation :/). UBI would replace all other welfare, and use that money. It would also take over some of the army’s budget because we are not at war rn. Please let me know what you think, I would love to see your thoughts on this!
Corporate wage slavery no thanks. Jobs won't even pay enough to rent a studio apartment that is not in a crime ridden ghetto. Capitalism is killing us.
Put the poor on a plantation.
If you can't make a living wage in the US at this moment, you're too stupid or lazy.
If your career goal is no greater than McDonald's, you deserve what you have.
A Story of Saints and Divine Blessings
Sand castles
Just as Harun was rich and opulent and Caliph of vast domains, Behlul was a saint, scornful of the riches of the world and focused on the eternal, timeless riches that accrue to men and women of goodness. Harun spent his time in the palace, surrounded by courtiers and sycophants. Behlul spent his time in the desert in seclusion. Oftentimes, he was observed building castles in the desert sand, only to demolish them after he had built them.
One day, Harun was riding in the desert with his comrades when he saw his brother building castles in the sand. The emperor descended from his royal stallion and greeted his brother: “How are you, my good brother?”, asked the emperor. “Shukr Allah, Alhamdulillah (thanks be to God, praise be to God), I am well”, replied Behlul.
The Caliph observed that Behlul had built a sand castle. Reaching out to engage his brother, Harun asked: “I would like to buy that sand castle. How much does it cost?” Behlul usually charged only one dinar (a gold coin) from merchants who were passing by. He would take the money and distribute it to the poor the following morning. But Harun was a mighty Caliph. He had untold riches. Behlul asked for a price worthy of a king.
“One hundred dinars (gold coins)”, came the immediate reply. “And I will distribute the dinars to the poor tomorrow morning at the bazaar.” “One hundred dinars for a sand castle?” rejoined the Caliph. “That is too much for a mere sand castle”. “It is one hundred dinars. It is up to you either to buy it or not to buy it.” The Caliph was not interested. He said salaam to his brother, mounted his horse with its saddle of gold and rubies and departed.
That night, as Harun slept in his royal chambers, he had a dream. He dreamed that he was taken up to heaven and was shown places of unspeakable grandeur and beauty. When Harun asked the accompanying angel to whom these palaces belonged, he was told these were the palaces built by his brother Behlul and purchased from him by passing merchants.
Harun woke up immediately from the dream. He could sleep no longer and spent the night sauntering back and forth in his luscious gardens waiting for dawn. Even before the sun rose from the east, Harun mounted his horse and went out into the desert searching for his brother. At last he located him in a desolate spot, playing with sand as usual. Offering greeting of peace, the Caliph descended from his horse and in a very solicitous voice he said:
“Brother, I will buy that castle you offered me yesterday for one hundred dinars: “The price has gone up. It is one million dinars today. And it must be paid in cash.”
Harun was aghast. “One million dinars! Only yesterday, you said it was one hundred dinars.”
“Yes, the angels took that castle to heaven. The demand is up and this is a new castle. I was told by the angels to distribute all of your gold among the poor of the land.”
Harun felt remorse in his heart. He had missed a golden opportunity to buy for himself a castle in heaven. And now the asking price of one million dinars was so high. He left empty handed, walking slowly in the desert, holding the reins of his horse.
The Shaikh who was narrating the story turned to his students and said: “O people! O my children! When Allah gives you an opportunity to do good, do not postpone it. The opportunity may never come back to you. A good deed is like Divine mercy. When you perform good deeds, you buy yourself a place close to Divine presence. You buy yourself a castle in heaven. Abolish welfare. Charity only.
My aunt was poor and had 9 kids. She received welfare her entire adult life. The majority of her children (my cousins) ended up on welfare and now multiple grandchildren are on welfare. Welfare has become a way of life for that family. They just assume welfare is their primary income.
If you can just "make them work for their welfare", then why isn't there a 100% employment? We could just force everyone to get a job (that's what you would be doing)
It's obviously not a realistic idea. Welfare saves people, WE HAVE FIRST HAND SEEN THAT! So, as long as you give MORE to the people struggling (which there's alot more than you think)…then idc what you do just do it.
Tax the 1% enough for most of what we need, then raise all of ours just a little…but give Healthcare choice to everyone, fund all schools cause we need smart futures, don't let poor people stay poor, and house the homeless.
Id pay alone if I was Besos for all of it, so YOU elites and millionaire news hosts and millionaire politicians can pay the brunt and we can all pitch in a little. Its really simple and easy but money interests put this garbage out to make people with ignorance think they are have intelligence afterward.
Shame! Shame! Shame! Lmfao
