Individuals constantly would like to know: “How do I get fit?”
My response is, “fit to be what?”
A powerlifter? A marathon runner? Or perhaps you wish to look great, feel excellent, or just know everything works.
I’ve been an individual trainer for 40 years. I’ve trained Hollywood celebs, captains of market, stay-at-home mothers, and ultra-athletes. I’ve trained post-surgical customers, obese kids, and overweight grownups.
I’ve seen health, workout, and diet plan fads come and go.
Three things endure. 3 habits that should be repeated– day after day– to get fit, stay healthy, and make a spot in what I like to call the fitness middle class.
What is the fitness middle class?
Take a look at an image from Woodstock, 1969. I challenge you to discover 10 overweight individuals or 10 bodybuilders. The extremes just aren’t there. Everyone looks … trim. That is– or was– the physical fitness middle class. And that’s what America has lost.
How can we get it back? And how can you belong to it?
: Move every day.
There are 2 types of exercise: aerobic and anaerobic.
The goal of aerobic workout is to reinforce your heart and your lungs. If you’re actually out of shape, start with a walk to the mail box. You get the idea.
Anaerobic exercise, on the other hand, develops muscle mass. Muscle squandering starts around 35. It’s a medical condition called Sarcopenia. That’s why people diminish as they age. If you lose one pound of muscle per year, between your 80th and 35th birthdays, you’ll successfully lose half your muscle mass. Lots of physicians will tell you there’s nothing you can do about this. They’re incorrect.
When President Ronald Reagan was injured by an assassin’s bullet at age 70, medical professionals put him on a weight-lifting regimen as part of his recovery. He included so much muscle, his tailors had to make brand-new matches.
What type of muscle training should you do?
If you go to a health club every day and do squats and bench press, excellent; but if that’s not you, at a minimum:
You have a flooring. Do push ups.
You have a doorway. Do bring up.
Dumbbells are great, and very convenient. Backyard work is great exercise too. Cleaning your house even counts.
2nd: Cut back on sugars, grains, carbs, and processed foods.
Here’s the sad reality: America is fat. However you do not need to be.
Here’s the finest way to lose weight: no sugars, no grains. The closer you get to it, the better.
If you’re going to eat carbohydrates, stick to veggies and some fruit. Prevent crackers, chips, fries, and anything you ‘d discover at a state fair.
Meat, fish, eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, walnuts, pecans, and cheese are all your friends.
You can’t walk into a wheat field and eat wheat off the stalk. Sugar is processed. Just about everything that comes in a package is processed.
Here’s another reality: exercise is a bad way to lose weight. Washboard abs? You get those in the kitchen area, not the fitness center.
I can hear you say, “this is fantastic advice for people who go shopping at Whole Foods. I’m not that individual.”
I get it.
So, here’s the solution: invest less on fast food and more on good food. You’ll conserve money in the long run.
Here’s what you can not afford– bad health, and the medical bills that will come from being obese.
Third: Get some sunlight.
Vitamin D is your pal.
Maturing in Louisiana, I was outside in the sun for hours a day, every day. Was every human for all time up until 5 minutes ago.
At some point, Americans ended up being terrified of the big yellow orb in the sky. Today, we slather our kids in three layers of sun block every 15 minutes.
Vitamin D assists your body immune system, bones, muscles, and connective tissue. There’s a great chance the last time you saw your medical professional, he prescribed vitamin D supplements. The best solution is all-natural. Do something outside.
Let’s evaluate.
Move every day.
No sugars, no grains.
Get some sunshine.
That’s it. Reaching the fitness middle class isn’t made complex. Anybody can do it.
Let me add this: A little is much better than nothing. More is much better than a little.
I’m not a fitness scrooge. I care more about what you do in between New Year’s and Christmas than between Christmas and New Year’s.
On your birthday, delight in the cake. On Thanksgiving, consume the stuffing.
You can live a little … and be healthy at the same time.
