America Lost (PBS, 2019)
America Lost is a documentary triptych that explores life in three of America’s “forgotten cities”—Youngstown, Ohio, Memphis, Tennessee, and Stockton, California.
The film shows the dramatic decline of the American interior through a mosaic of stories including an ex-steelworker scrapping abandoned homes to survive, a recently incarcerated father trying to rebuild his life, and a pair of sisters hoping to escape their blighted urban neighborhood.
I spent five years gathering these incredibly intimate portraits of Americans living on the edge. The film sheds light on how our crumbling social institutions have created a dangerous divide between the haves and have nots.

Personal recovery requires a serious commitment to God, whatever that means to you. It means a commitment to God’s people. Join a church, a synagogue, a mosque, a temple. Attend regularly and build those spiritual and social networks among people with positive goals. Joining a gang or going it alone won’t cut it.
And then the government, our local, state, and national leaders simply MUST be God-fearing individuals. No matter how good the programs, how much money is thrown at it, without a mandate from God, first, the people next, it will continue to fail.
Regular people, get yourself registered, get off your buttocks, and vote. Any candidate who disregards God is unworthy of your vote.
No, America is NOT a Christian nation, is not a Godly nation. It’s up to us to make it so. It’s the only way we’ll stop the deterioration.
(Joseph in prison, again. Don’t give up. Start by seeking God, by improving your small circle of influence. It can be very simple. Get from the chaplain a religious book, a religious article. Start and end each day with a short prayer. Brighten at least one person’s day, every day. That can mean a smile, a respectful reply, rendering some small assistance. Do it even if you don’t feel like it. Give it a try for a day, then two days, three, etc. Keep in touch with family and positive people on the outside as much as you can. Look for a role model. You may not find one, but at least look. And DON’T GIVE UP!).

People don’t understand. In the market economy, the manufacturers will go where are cheapest labors and costs. Right now, even China outsourced some of its manufacturers to poorer countries like African countries. Workers have to learn new skills to find new jobs. Bring back manufacturing jobs are not realistic.
