I am the happy child of immigrants from Bangladesh. I was raised in New York City, which has actually benefited tremendously from the energy and ambition of the countless individuals born abroad who’ve picked to make it their home. But I likewise think that America’s immigration system requires to work for America, and right now, that is simply not the case.
We need a brand-new migration system. We’re typically presented with 2 plain options: Open borders or severe restrictions.
Before I offer a solution, let’s look at the typical suspects. The case for open borders is, on the surface, quite attractive. Tens of countless people worldwide would be grateful to come to America for the opportunity to live in peace and make a decent living. The vast bulk of them mean us no harm. Why not provide a chance to share in the true blessings of liberty?
The simple answer is that our country is more than just a marketplace. We’re a democracy based upon a social agreement. Americans pay taxes so that, to name a few things, the poorest, most unfortunate among us can still lead dignified and good lives.
You might be eligible for joblessness advantages or impairment if you can’t work. If you do work but your income does not go far enough for you to pay for healthcare or food for your kids, we have a safeguard developed to assist you stay afloat.
Liberals and conservatives disagree on how extensive this safeguard should be, however they all concur it requires to be there. The question is, how we far want to stretch it?
A century earlier, immigrants who discovered they couldn’t make it in America had little option but to return home. That is no longer the case. These days, immigrants who can’t earn enough to support their families have access to numerous government benefits. That does not make them bad people. In an age of offshoring and automation, salaries for menial tasks do not go very far. If we just admitted a modest number of low-skill immigrants– state, as political refugees– we might quickly manage it. Over the past forty years, we have enabled millions of low-skill immigrants into the country, both lawfully and illegally. While highly-educated immigrants pay even more in
taxes than they consume in benefits, the reverse is true of immigrants with less than a high school diploma
Immigrant engineers working for Google, Amazon and Apple do simply great without federal government aid. If we were to open our borders, the number of low-skilled immigrants would escalate, and so too would the cost of meeting their requirements.
Maybe the abundant might wall themselves off in gated communities. But the growing ranks of the bad and even the middle class would need to deal with ever more strained social services. That might provoke resentment strong enough to trigger genuine class warfare.
If open borders are a bad concept, so too is severely limiting migration. Why shut ourselves off from the dynamism and energy that immigrants can bring?
Luckily, there is a way to repair this problem.
