The United States had to combat not one, but 2 wars for its independence. The very first, obviously, was the Revolutionary War.
Can you call the 2nd?
It was the War of 1812.
Now, both wars were against the British. And in both cases, the Americans should have lost.
The Revolutionary War is very much celebrated in American history. The second one has all however been forgotten.
However had it been lost, America’s history would have been much, much various.
The British precipitated the war by failing to recognize the United States as a sovereign nation. For five years between 1807 and 1812, they consistently interrupted American commerce, boarding American merchant ships, capturing their sailors– over 5,000 of them– and requiring them to work on British ships.
Finally, President James Madison stated, “Enough!” and on June 18, 1812, Congress stated war on Britain. The bliss didn’t last long. And for excellent factor. The Americans had no viable strategy, no standing army to speak of, no generals deserving of the rank, an extremely small navy, a wholly inadequate supply of munitions.
It was a various story on the British side. They had all the males, ships, admirals and generals they required– and then some. If these upstart Yankees desired war, the British were only too pleased to accommodate them.
Things went pretty much as anticipated: one American defeat after another, culminating in the burning of Washington, D.C
. The great prize of the war was not the tiny American capital, or even the bigger, nearby city of Baltimore. The reward the British wanted was the entrance to the American West, the city at the mouth of the Mississippi River– New Orleans. If Britain managed this essential southern port, it could inspect American expansion, confining it to the eastern half of the continent for the foreseeable future.
To take New Orleans, the British generated a huge sea and land force– 60 ships, 10,000 men.
And what could the Americans offer by method of defense? Go Into Andrew Jackson, one of the most exceptional figures in American history.
Born in 1767 in the areas of the Carolinas, Jackson initially encountered the British throughout the Revolutionary War. His memories were not delighted ones. His mother and his 2 brothers passed away in the war. And Jackson himself was entrusted to an irreversible scar, the present of a British officer who slashed him with his sword when the teenage young boy declined to clean his boots.
Self-educated, Jackson settled in Nashville, Tennessee. There he ended up being a frontier attorney and, after Tennessee was admitted to the Union, served briefly as its sole congressman, then as a senator representing the new state.
Though he had no official basic training, Jackson was chosen major general of the Tennessee militia and gained battling experience leading several successful campaigns versus the Indians of the area.
He motivated both great loyalty and great fear in the men under his command: commitment since he battled beside them, sustaining every hardship they sustained; and fear due to the fact that he demanded rigorous military discipline. Provided the inherently defiant, do not- tread-on-me nature of the frontiersmen under his command, this was no mean accomplishment.
