I wish to inform you something that everybody once knew, and now numerous have actually either forgotten or never learned.
Pay very attention: America assures you freedom. America does not assure you enjoy.
Let’s begin with the freedom part. Flexibility to practice the religious beliefs of your choice. The function of government is to secure your flexibility.
America was a rough-and-tumble location in its early days. Let’s hope it always remains so. You do not want to live in a country where all your needs are taken care of by the federal government.
America is a land of opportunity for anyone of any color. Simply follow some standard rules– get an education, strive, act properly– and you’ll have an excellent chance at a great life. You may likewise stop working. You might stop working a lot of times … and then be successful. Or you may be successful and blow it all. That’s America– a relentless dance of risk and reward. All made possible by flexibility.
Flexibility is America’s source of power, and the denial of that power to black individuals and others at the beginning of this nation and for almost 200 years after its founding stays a stain and a source of pain. Yes, some of the Founders had servants. Practically all of them knew that it was ethically wrong and would one day end.
And when it ended, giants like Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass comprehended that black Americans would have to prosper on their own as free guys and females. They had no illusions that the government would save them. They just wanted what all Americans must ever desire the federal government to do: safeguard their flexibility.
The Founders never assured love– not to blacks or whites or anybody else.
Throughout his famous “I have a dream speech,” Martin Luther King referenced flexibility 20 times. He never ever as soon as spoke the word “love.”.
Why not? Because America has absolutely nothing to do with that. If you desire love– and we all do– aim to God, your family, and your friends.
The federal government does not enjoy you and isn’t expected to. The government is a poor and abusive company. It provides the bare minimum and fosters a dependence that undermines liberty.
Throughout the 2020 “Black Lives Matter” season, NBA gamers actually wore jerseys with the slogan “Love Us” emblazoned on the back. You can’t demand love from individuals. Love is easily given, or not provided at all. Telling people not to call you this name or that name, or not to act this way or that method– purposely or unconsciously– because it upsets you will not bring you enjoy.
Love is your mother’s smile or that look your kid gives you when you get home from work. Love is that man or lady who secures you when you’re frightened and provides a home where you can flourish. And love is what God provides you every minute of every day.
To the government, you’re simply a Social Security number– absolutely nothing more. And I’m fine with that. Because I don’t want or expect the federal government to know or appreciate me. Primarily, I desire the government to leave me alone.
I’m proud to be an American. And I’m proud to be a black guy in America. Blacks have made enormous contributions to this country. However let me inform you what our single biggest contribution has actually been: We have actually been this country’s moral conscience. Blacks have actually forced America to measure up to its best ideals. Our righteous pursuit of flexibility– pursuit of liberty, not love– forced this country to look for and discover its better self.
