Are GMOs Good or Bad? | 5 Minute Video
Are GMOs really the dangerous experimental foods that activists claim? Patrick Moore cuts through the hype and gives you the facts: how GMOs improve our lives, and how they can save millions of people in the developing world from hunger and disease — if we only let them.

We are all genetically modified organisms, all 7 billion of us and every other creature on earth produced by sexual reproduction. I point this out because “genetically modified” has become a loaded term that is misused to describe recombinant DNA biotechnology, one of the most important technological advances in the 10,000-year history of agriculture. Throw in bogus, Hollywood-inspired terms like Franken Foods, Killer Tomatoes, and Terminator Seeds, and you have the makings of one of the most groundless anti-science campaigns in the history of anti-science campaigns.
We have been modifying the genetics of plants and animals since agriculture and the domestication of animals began. The anti-GMO activists counter, “Nature never moves DNA from one species to another; therefore GMOs are ‘unnatural’.” Not so. Genes have been moving across species’ boundaries since life began. Bacteria routinely carry fragments of DNA from one species to another, and that DNA is sometimes incorporated into the genes of the host species.
This random movement of genetic material has been one of the driving forces in the development of species. The human genome, for example, has 70 percent of its genes in common with the sea urchin. Why wouldn’t we harness this naturally occurring phenomenon to improve the makeup of our food and fiber crops?
Today 18 million farmers in 28 countries are growing genetically modified crops on 448 million acres, 12 percent of the world’s farmland, or about the same area as all US cropland. It would be at least three times that if not for bans and restrictions in many countries — bans and restrictions that are irrational, anti-science, and terribly harmful to the world’s poor.
Every credible science, health, and nutrition organization in the world says the genetically modified food available today is safe — without reservation. This includes the World Health Organization, the European Commission, and the Society for Toxicology.
How many people know, for example, that the Durum Wheat used to make most of our pasta had its DNA modified by exposing seeds to high-level gamma radiation? And there is no labeling required!
But what about those supposedly evil seed companies like Monsanto? Aren’t they trying to “control the world’s food supply?”
First, let’s remember that these companies are not weapons manufacturers or drug cartels; they are trying to make better seeds for agriculture. Second, the seed companies don’t decide which seeds to plant; farmers make that decision. The fact is these companies have done massive good. Millions of people have nutritious food to eat thanks to their innovative work, work that has also reduced the use of pesticides.
Recently the first comprehensive study of genetically modified crop performance reported some surprising numbers. On average, GM crops increased yield by 22 percent, reduced pesticide use 37 percent, and increased farmer profits by 68 percent.

If in fact less pesticides are used in growing gmo crops how to you explain farmers that spray roundup on ripening wheat fields as desiccants just before harvest. Of course that means that the pesticides are placed on crops that will be dumped into our food system to be consumed by inspecting consumers. You are correct that just being gmo is not necessarily a bad thing. But modifying a crop to be unfazed by Roundup which ultimately sends that poison into American 's dinner plates is unconscionable.
we were just fearmoengred
Is this prayer u or a nightmare infiltration 😮
Briefly and substantively. Thank you, Patrick Moore, for countering the bulk of nonsense from Greenpeace. Good work.
We are against GMO because of the fact that there are no long term studies on how it affects the body. We are against GMO because this isn't natural selection/ evolution. It's humans altering DNA. Humans are injecting traits from other crops into whatever they are modifying. That can be very dangerous as cells are likely to be unstable. We are against GMO because scientists warned the FDA(who we don't trust to begin with) they could be dangerous, yet they were approved anyway. We are against GMO because Mansanto is NOT a good company. They have paid billions in damages to people hurt by their glyphosate. This product is found on many crops. It's an herbicide. We are against GMO because they are made to be more resistant to pesticides. Farmers can spray tons of more harmful chemicals and the crops won't die thanks to GMO. How exactly are less pesticides being used then? We are against GMO because it is not natural and our bodies don't do well with ingesting unnatural things. We are against GMO because countries in Europe and some of Asia with higher food standards, stricter regulations, and HEALTHIER people don't allow them. It's crazy how much more unhealthy America is: obesity, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, gluten intolerance, always sick, etc. It's because of what's in our food. Many causes of these things aren't permitted in Europe and they are far healthier. We don't trust our FDA that wants us to be sick constantly. We believe in the use of highly effective, all organic, good grade "pesticides"(diatomaceous earth). Ban GMO. Ban the use of harmful pesticides. Seriously, if there is a way to do it without man made interference, then why not continue to do so the way God intended. Leave our food alone
Yeah… The bubonic place is more natural than GMOS, so it's time to go to Madagascar to get captured by a giant mosquito and die 1 day later! GMOS suck!
First of all, the NATURAL exchange of DNA that he was talking about, occurred through millions of years, and not decades, like humans are doing right now. Furthermore, this NATURAL exchange of DNA between species does not always work out in the hosts’ favour. In fact, most of these NATURAL DNA exchanges, turn out to be deleterious to the host, killing him. Only the few that give the host an advantage, are incorporated into the new genome. The analogy between human created GMO and the COVID experimental medicine (aka. The covid vaccine) is glaring. These so-called vaccines, having been rushed into production and use, have saved no one, and harmed tens of millions. Other than the blatant human criminality, the reason for it was that something that usually takes 10 to 15 years to develop and test, was rushed into use within months. I can say the same about the GMO’s. We have absolutely no idea what health problems, if any, might be caused by us using GMO’s in our food supply, and whoever says otherwise is a liar, just like all the “scientists” who told us that the jab was safe and effective were liars. Am I saying that GMO’s are definitely unhealthy? No, but I am saying that because of the relative novelty of these things, no one can say that in a long run, they won’t prove to be. And whoever invokes science to say otherwise is a charlatan, or is extremely arrogant
7y ago lol still helpful
Selective breeding & genetic modification are 2 different things. Using CRIPSR to inject genetic material from bugs & viruses is insane.
You got this one wrong, BIG TIME.
GMOs in the food, fluoride in the water, aluminum & mercury in vaccines, spraying chemicals into the air, all in a soup of cell phone & wifi radiation.
Putting insect & virus genetics into our food supply is wrong & harmful!
I generally agree with alot of the things you put out but artificial secletion and domestition while technically genetic modification are not what a normal person is refering to when they say gmo
When any normal person says gmo they are specifically referring to the genetically recombined ones not the ones derived from the maniplulation of natural proccassies
In addition while generally being safe there have been plenty of instances when compaines abused gmos and or caused bad yeilds due to their medeling
In addition seeds like the round up ready seeds have caued other plants like thistle and other common weeds to develop herbaisde resistance due to the increased used of said herbasides much like the overprescription of antibotics has lead to the rise of antibiotic resistance in several strains of common diseases
I agree as to what’s been said, however; are there any long term studies on the use and consumption of GMO’s products?
Don't care what organizations say!
We don't trust a single organization, not one! Especially the WHO.
They each have an agenda, and are corrupt
The problem is that so many people think that unnatural means bad
There's a reason females are entering puberty younger and younger. It's found in our food. Thousands of years of recorded history, somehow, people were able to grow food…all of a sudden, we need gmos and bug resistant seeds so revolting even bugs won't eat it? Not to mention the fact they came on the scene only a few years ago. One day we'll all know the truth. Until then I'm ever grateful for freedom in America. I suggest the prager u video about the girl who escaped North korea to open your eyes on how good you have it here. Uphold the constitution. Obey the God who gave you life.
One of the possible side effects of GMO food is that it could cause a increase in the resistance to the use of antibiotics. Since there are small handful of companies producing gmocs this could make it difficult for the small farmer since those companies can thus control the price and the profit of the seeds of those plants.
Do you lose vitamin a during self pleasure ?
Seven years later, and concerned about more & more foods now containing Bioengineered food – something banned all throughout Europe – so why are citizen of the US forced to? And yes, GMO's are bad, but the I think this is even worse. Also, fake beef another one.
It's all bad.
This is BS and America needs to clean up it's act in this respect.
Leftie Liberals: Look at those Conservatists they don't believe in climate change they deny science lol
Also Leftie Liberals: There aren't just 2 genders who said that, there are 52 and counting!
Ironic though that now you have a kids show where you teach children to doubt experts in the first episode. Don’t know if you’ve ever hear the phrase “pick a lane” but maybe look into that…
I would like to hear an opposing view from PragerU, because this video sounds off to me. He said in the video and I quote "Recently the first GMO comprehensive steady released", is there only the one study they are referring to for this video? Since the start of covid, how can you believe in science or green peace for that matter?
He turns Canadian at 4:05
Why should I trust what the WHO and their friends tell me?
Thank you for breaking down GMOs.
WTH!!!! i can't believe this is a Prager U video, very dissapointing.
Is the matter as simple as this? There's more to it. What are independent scientists saying of GMO?
This is the first prageru video that I’ve seen that hasn’t made me infuriated, good job!
gmo is just a more advanced version of selective breeding. Saying you don’t like gmo is like saying you would like to eat wilder strawberry because it is more natural. With gmo, we can convert a wilder strawberry into the modern one in just less than 10 years! Don’t make a argument that gmo is unhealthy; we would never choose to force a farmer to plant a seed with a bad trait so if you think gmo is bad, you don’t get the point of what is gmo
More inconvenient truths regarding the ignorant, misleading, and morbidly cruel propaganda spread by the anti-gmo faction of the environmentalist movement. Another example of the old adage that "Ignorance is bliss"–but it's only true if one is both ignorant and deliberately blind to begin with. When one is ignorant of science and the real workings of the environment, it's VERY easy to fall for drivel peddled by devious bad actors.

Roundup sprayed on vegetation makes the plants unable to receive nutrition from their roots. Plants that are modified, like soy beans , won't be affected the same way. They will grow as unmodified plants. The problem is that the roundup used on these plants is on the fruit of these plants and doesn't wash off. So when processed it gets into our food, which then affects our bodies by restricting our ability to absorb nutrition.

Prager U has some great stuff,,,this is not one,,,GMO's are used to control seed production , so farmers have to buy seeds from companies like "Monsanto",,,,they used to be able to just save them,,,,nothing good about that,,,then we genetically modify plants so we can drench them with more and stronger pesticides like Roundup and they can withstand it,,,,so then the food comes out with high levels of poison,,,those are just two of the main reasons,,,,Monsanto serves non gmo food in their cafeterias I have heard from more than one source. In my mind GMO modifying used in the way Monsanto and the like are using it,,,is pure control,,,greed and money,,,and downright population reduction,,,,
Gmo always bad
I’ve been a fan of Prager U, however, videos like this give me serious cause to question the entire organization, and whether the information delivered on other topics can be trusted…
I guess nothing and no one is perfect… but still sad 😔
I usually disagree with PragerU. GMOs might be the only thing where i and PragerU can find a common ground on.
watch "The Truth About GMOs" from the channel Real Science, and " The Real Problem With GMO Food" from the channel Our Changing Climate, for what are in my opinion more nuanced and unbiased videos on this issue.
I bought organic greens at an upscale produce market. It had crunchy bug parts.
Then a found a dung ball, it looked like a milk dud.
No more organic crap for me.
I've tried golden rice in my country 🇩🇴 and ut tastes the best ever, we don't really care about GMOs since most ppl here don't even know what a GMOs are
Nothing against GMOs but go to a real farmers market and compare the taste and flavor of the food. No comparison. The natural grown food is much better. Why? Cation Exchange Capacity. I'll let you figure that one out you're the scientist. It's not good to live your whole life based on the scientific method. Remember "Sciences are vain and full of errors that are not born of experience, the mother of all knowledge." Leonardo Da Vinci.
How typical, the left is celebrating 'feel good' legislation that results in the death of millions of children. They are driven by 100% mindless emotion, I don't think they're capable of having a rational thought.
