I know what it’s like to walk into a room where plain truth appears like a foreign idea. Where simply speaking your mind can feel overwhelming. Where the starting principles of The United States of America are honestly ridiculed.
Just to offer you an idea of how weird things can get at the UN, consider that the Human Rights Council is dominated by some of the world’s worst human rights culprits– countries like China, Cuba, and Venezuela. And America, the nation that has actually secured the God-given rights of hundreds of millions of individuals all over the globe, is freely slammed.
Why am I telling you this? Due to the fact that most college campuses have become as anti-American– which is to state morally backward– as the UN. And the only person who can set it best side up is you.
If that sounds like I’m asking you to take on a heavy problem, that’s due to the fact that I am. I wouldn’t be asking if I didn’t think you depended on it. I totally believe that you are.
I’ve spoken at a lot of colleges. I’m persuaded that the majority of the students still have a strong, intuitive love of our country. That’s why I’m optimistic about America’s future. However I know that it’s tough to speak up. I know the academic facility is against you. I didn’t say this was going to be easy. It is, however, going to be necessary.
What is it that I’m asking you to do? Defend your right to speak out. Protect America.
Speaking up does not mean being disrespectful and, naturally, it never ever indicates resorting to violence. It means, having the realities and saying the reality with clarity and function. And, if you’re saying the reality, do not pull back, even if your classmates or teacher– or, in my case, the agents of 193 governments– try to make you look silly.
Safeguarding America suggests you need to know American history. Given how inadequately that history is taught nowadays, you might have to supplement your education. Start with the primary sources: The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, George Washington’s farewell speech, the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s 2nd inaugural. And build out from there.
Discover America’s history on your own. Make up your own mind. Always keep in mind that you’re comparing America to reality, not to paradise. Likewise bear in mind that you need to judge people in the context of their time, not by the requirements of our time. I have every self-confidence you’ll find yourself caring this nation as much as I do if you do that.
America has a terrific story to inform. Initially you have to have the guts to tell it. What the defend racial equality was to prior generations, the fight for free speech and intellectual flexibility is to your generation. You are on the cutting edge. You are the rebel.
Never ever before, in my life time, can I remember when more Americans were as stifled or as constantly informed what they’re permitted to think and what they’re permitted to state.
And what are we enabled to say in America? What sorts of stylish concepts are considered sophisticated by our top universities? Often, they’re the really same ones espoused by the hooligans on the Human Rights Council: That America is racist, that industrialism– the only economic system to raise billions of individuals out of poverty– is the source of our problems, that socialism is bliss, that flexibility of speech is not that crucial.
These are extremely bad ideas. They’re also dead wrong. There is no question that America can and must improve.
Where the founding principles of The United States of America are freely ridiculed.
And America, the country that has actually protected the God-given rights of hundreds of millions of individuals all over the globe, is honestly criticized.
Safeguarding America indicates you need to understand American history. America has a terrific story to inform. And what are we enabled to state in America?
