I was born to hate Jews. It belonged to my life. I never questioned it. I was not born in Iran or Syria. I was born in England. My moms and dads moved there from Pakistan. Theirs was the common immigrant story: Move to the West in the hope of making a better life on their own and their kids.
We only wished the finest for everyone– everybody except the Jews. The Jews, we believed, were aliens living in taken Muslim land, occupiers who were engaged in a genocide against the Palestinian individuals. If the Jews were as evil as we had constantly thought, should not those who support them– Christians, Americans, and others in the West– be simply as evil?
Starting in the 1990s, speakers and instructors at mosques and in schools started to constantly duplicate this style: We were not Western. We were not British. We were Muslims, first and just. Our loyalty was to our faith and to our fellow Muslims. We owed nothing to the Western countries that invited us. As Westerners, they were our opponents.
I started to see the suffering of Muslims, consisting of in Britain, as the fault of Western imperialism. The West was at war with us, and the Jews managed the West. Disliking Israel was a badge of honor.
While at university I chose the protests and propaganda versus Israel were inadequate. True jihad required violence. So I made plans to join the real fight. I would leave college and join a terrorist training school in Pakistan. Thankfully for me, fate intervened– in a bookstore.
I stumbled upon a book called The Case for Israel by Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz. The case for Israel? What case could there be? The title itself made me furious, and I began to check out the pages nearly as an act of defiance. How ill-informed, how foolish, could this guy be to safeguard the indefensible? Well, he was a Jew. That needed to be the response. Still, I check out. And what I check out challenged all of my dogmas about Israel and the Jews: I check out that it wasn’t Israel that created the Palestinian refugee crisis; it was the Arab nations, the United Nations, and the corrupt Palestinian management. I read that Jews didn’t make use of the Holocaust to create the state of Israel; the motion to produce a modern Jewish state gone back to the 19th century, and eventually to the starts of the Jewish individuals nearly 4,000 years ago. And I check out that Israel is not engaged in genocide against the Palestinians. On the contrary, the Palestinian population has in fact doubled in simply twenty years.
