Cancel Culture: To the Point LIVE with Jon Noyes
Jon Noyes responds to recent protests against comedian Dave Chappelle, who, in his Netflix special, stated that every person is born of a woman. Similarly, J.K. Rowling, Kevin Hart, and even everyday people have found themselves caught in the crosshairs of cancel culture. How should Christians respond? Jon shares a biblical perspective, contrasting two philosophies, one that focuses on power and one that focuses on truth.

Well done Jon.
So we are going to pretend that liberals like The Dixie Chicks, Bill Maher among others were not targeted for having their careers destroyed, often by those on the Christian right-wing? If cancel culture is bad why is it OK when it is done to liberals or those not on the Christian right-wig?
Lets add a little bit of history to this topic, shall we? Cancel culture is not a new thing. It is merely a new name for something that has gone on throughout history.
In Christianity, heretics used to get cancelled. This started in earnest as soon as Christianity became the dominant, official religion in the roman empire in 380 AD. Heretics were then prosecuted and often executed, a practice that in some places continued into the 19th century. In Spain, the last heretic was hanged in 1826. That's more than 14 centuries of official catholic Christian cancel culture.
And, just to make sure it doesn't escape your attention: This version of cancel culture killed people to cancel them. As far as I know, this hasn't happened to any of the "victims" of modern day cancel culture, yet. When we talk about getting bullied or losing your job because of dissent, there are numerous Christian organizations where that happens regularly up to the present day. For example, to mention the catholic church once more, it is quite common for employees in catholic-run schools or kindergartens, or charities, to get fired when they divorce or deconvert. And the church defends this as totally normal, for why should you employ anyone who doesn't adhere to your version of the "Truth"?
Yet, somehow, others like Amazon are not allowed to have any such policy, and to "cancel" an author for not complying with their rules? That is, quite honestly, hypocrisy of the highest degree!
Note that I'm not trying to defend cancel culture here. The critique Jon has aimed at it is partly in agreement with my own opinion. But he is absolutely wrong to criticize it from the Christian perspective. Christianity loves to picture itself as the victim, but in reality it was the oppressor during most of its history, as soon as it was in a position of sufficient power. Wherever it still has such power, I see it carrying on with this cancelling and bullying.
Excellent discussion. Great resources in the Chat Replay, too. I'm not going to say much about the topic at hand because it will turn into a rant. I'll just say, I was raised in a generation that knew what oppression, division, poverty, and death lies at the end of the path our culture is heading in. Many in my generation have forgotten; I remember.
America is the 21st century of the Roman empire of early century's. Man is his own god & we r now an idolatrous nation. We have lost the protection of God & r now following satan who fills the earth with lies. I could go on & on but we as a NATION r a godless society. We traded truth 4 lies & I dont believe there is any turning back to God as a nation just like the rest of the world has gone. What's next is the Book of Revelation is about to be fulfilled.
Any Social Conservative who was raised in a house full of Democrats is very familiar with Cancel Culture. What we are seeing now is just the same thing with the iron fist of corporate and political power behind it. That's the way that it is, and we are not even allowed to say it.
We have to love all people…. everyone is offended about everything….. its ok to disagree, kindly. Its funny all this left and right malarky, and all this general malarky, taking us away from praising and just loving God which is our way out. And agree re local church, cant really find that online as so many christians in fighting online….
Thank you for your very interesting episode on cancel culture. I didnt know very much about the subject, so thank you it was very educational for me. Tracey Burroughs from South Africa 🇿🇦.
Jon, the transgender person named Daphne (9:18) was a man. You kept using the pronouns "she" and "her." Please don't surrender an inch to the Rainbow Gestapo on things like this.
I deleted my prior statement because it was not from my heart but from my gut. As a Catholic Christian, I have to agree with you. It is difficult to follow the teachings of our Lord.
