Climate Change: What’s So Alarming? | 5 Minute Video
Are droughts, hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters getting stronger and more frequent? Are carbon dioxide emissions, global temperatures and sea levels putting us on a path for climate catastrophe? Bjorn Lomborg, Director of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, breaks down the facts about the environment and shows why the reality of climate change may be very different from what you hear in the media.

Carbons emissions are rising—and faster than most scientists predicted.
But many climate-change alarmists seem to claim that all climate change is worse than expected. This ignores that much of the data is actually more encouraging than expected.
Yes, Arctic sea ice is melting faster than the models expected. But models also predicted that Antarctic sea ice would decrease, yet Antarctic sea ice is increasing.
Yes, sea levels are rising, but the rise is not accelerating—if anything, two recent papers, one by Chinese scientists published in January 2014, and the other by U.S. scientists published in May 2013, have shown a small decline in the rate of sea-level increase.
We are often being told that we’re seeing more and more droughts, but a study published in March 2014 in the journal Nature actually shows a decrease in the world’s surface that has been afflicted by droughts since 1982.
Facts like these are important because a one-sided focus on worst-case stories is a poor foundation for sound policies.
Hurricanes are likewise used as an example of things getting worse. But look at the U.S., where we have the best statistics: if we adjust for population and wealth, hurricane damage during the period of 1900-2013 actually decreased slightly.
At the U.N. climate conference in Lima, Peru in December 2014 attendees were told that their countries should cut carbon emissions to avoid future damage from storms like Typhoon Hagupit, which hit the Philippines during the conference, killing at least 21 people and forcing more than a million into shelters. Yet the trend for strong typhoons around the Philippines have actually declined since 1950, according to a study published in 2012 by the Journal of Climate.
Again, we’re told that all things are getting worse, but the facts don’t support this.
This does not mean that global warming is not real, or a problem, but the one-sided story of alarmism makes us lose focus. If we want to help the world’s poor, who are the most threatened by natural disasters, it’s less about cutting carbon emissions than it is about pulling them out of poverty.
The best way to see this is to look at the world’s deaths from natural disasters over time. In the Oxford University database for death rates from floods, extreme temperatures, droughts, and storms, the average in the first part of last century, was more than 130 dead every year per million people. Since then, the death rates have dropped 97 percent to a new low in the 2010s of less than 4 per million.
The dramatic decline is mostly due to economic developments that help nations withstand catastrophes. If you’re rich like Florida, a major hurricane might cause plenty of damage to expensive buildings, but it kills few people and causes only a temporary dent in economic output.
If a similar hurricane hits a poorer country like the Philippines or Guatemala, it kills many more people and can devastate the economy.
So let’s be clear. Climate change is not “worse than we thought.” That doesn’t mean it’s not a reality or not a problem. It is.
But the narrative that the world’s climate is changing from bad to worse is unhelpful alarmism that prevents us from focusing on smart solutions.

Climate change is a hoax
Yes, it's getting boring, let's stop that nonsense now.
About 12000 years ago the ice age ended. This was surely the greatest climate change known to "relatively modern" history.
Who was at fault then? No industry, no carbon emissions other than what volcanoes spat out, no people, no airplanes, no cars etc.
Explain that fact first and then come back with all the present CO2, climate and any other scare.
La,LA la! I can't hear you! I hear only the bad. Lol
A climate scam ,not a climate change……
Finally, realistic view on climate change
The science is what is the matter.
Plants breathe Carbon Dioxide and exhale Oxygen.
They are lying to us.
The Planet is greening.
Well, done.
I like the references and graphs to help understand the massive amounts of data needed to deal with this, but isn’t there a more updated video you can use than one from seven years ago?
Who is suppressing this real data? My guess is that it is the democratic politicians, environmentalist and the main stream propaganda press.
Great honest information thank you .
Instead of sowing alarmism real nature lovers should encourage natural life not substitute it with technological inventions that prove to be harmful to life itself.
I disagree. Your assumption is that CO2 causes an increase in temperature. It does not. Higher levels of CO2 are a REACTION to higher temperatures. As temperatures rise, the ocean releases CO2. This is a way of encouraging plant growth and thereby decreasing temperatures. When the atmospheric temperatures fall again, the ocean absorbs CO2. CO2 is not an enemy…it is our friend. Plants "inhale" it and then "exhale" oxygen. Good for plants, good for animals.
What's so alarming? NOTHING!
This video is 7 years old… shouldn't the world be in its last gasps by now??? United States of America has addressed, improved and solved many issues through rational thought, free enterprise, capitalism, strength and innovation, and we should continue on this path also. This current administration and his comrades have only made things overwhelmingly more complicated and worse.
SAVE AMERICA!!! MAGA!!! TRUMP 2024!!!
"Everything affects climate change" not just humans. Climate Change is going to be the biggest deflection in history to keep people from asking about the real problems in the world today. Sure, they want us to believe that 87% of scientists today believe humans are responsible for climate change when actually 100% believe we have an impact, but not to the extent the politicians and others want us to believe. It's a huge cash cow for them if they can keep us thinking it will kill us if we don't fix it. Ever notice how interviewers never ask these scientists what the ideal amount of CO2 is needed or ideal to sustain life on Earth? If we all sit in a theatre or university class, the CO2 level will be around 1500ppm to 2000ppm after 3 hours. If the CO2 level gets below 150ppm all insects die, all birds die, all animals die, all plants die, and all humans die. Does no-one notice that the Earth is getting greener because of increased CO2? A greener Earth means more crops and therefore more food to feed the World's hungry. Don't fall for this fake agenda. Climatologists are hypocrites, running around in big vehicles and flying all over the world spewing pollutants into the air we breathe. They should be sailing overseas on wooden sail ships or travelling over land on bicycles to reduce their contribution to CO2 in the atmosphere. The dinosaurs didn't kill the planet and they were much bigger than humans. The CO2 levels have gone up and down for billions of years and they will in the future. The planet will take care of itself.
Don’t we already have the answer to climate change ?
Nuclear
Why is global warming an issue at all? It has been much warmer than today and CO2 has been as much as 20 times higher than today, and those two have never correlated in history.
Global warming cultists are pagans who foist their damaging superstitions upon us all.
Climate change is cyclical.
If you take a glass of water and start adding stones the level rises. Sp, isn't it feasible dumping ships, road debris and many other things may be the culprit opposed to the hoax of global warming.
Population…too many people demanding too many things causing too much pollution. Decrease the population, decrease the demand, decrease the pollution.
Its population that needs to be curbed, but who has the guts to say it and implement what needs to be done?
You forgot to brutally echo chamber this comment section XD
