Freedom of speech. Most of us who live in liberal Western democracies think of it as a basic human. Now we might be in danger of losing it.
The danger is not originating from without– from external opponents– but from within. A generation is being raised not to think in liberty OF speech, however rather that they must have flexibility FROM speech– from speech they do not like. This is a hazard to both pluralism and democracy itself.
We see this in Europe where “sensitivity-based” censorship efforts to prohibit anything deemed despiteful or even simply upsetting, and to ban criticism of religious beliefs, particularly Islam.
The United States, in spite of its strong Constitutional defenses in the Bill of Rights is far from immune from the rising trend of suppression of speech, or what is in some cases called political correctness. This is specifically real at America’s universities and colleges, the place where our future leaders are informed and where you ‘d anticipate speech to be the most totally free.
Extremely restrictive speech codes are now the norm on schools, not the exception. How bad is it?
