As soon as there was a South American nation with a promising future. It had a functioning democracy, a quickly establishing economy, and a growing middle class. All the important indicators, including education, healthcare, and foreign investment, were pointed in the ideal instructions.
It was far from perfect, but the state of mind was confident– and with good reason.
But now all that promise is gone. The country is an unsuccessful state, a hollowed-out shell of its former self.
The most fundamental consumer goods, from bread to toilet paper, are in chronically brief supply. Democracy has been replaced by a virtual dictatorship.
The nation is, I’m sorry to say, my beloved Venezuela, a location in which my household has deep roots.
I can tell you what happened to it in one word: socialism.
In 1999, then-candidate for president Hugo Chavez promised to lead the people of Venezuela to a socialist paradise. This incorrect would be righted, he ensured the voters, if they elected him.
And they did.
To their everlasting remorse.
Chavez drew motivation from his coach, Fidel Castro. Like his coach, he delighted in providing speeches– some that lasted as numerous as 7 hours! He even gave himself his own weekly tv program where he would spontaneously break into song.
Here’s a rule: When your nation’s leader starts singing on national television, you’re in problem.
Under Chavez, the federal government of Venezuela took control of industry after market. The federal government, he guaranteed everybody, would run these services much better than personal business, and the earnings would be “shared” by the individuals. With great fanfare, he tore up contracts with multinational oil and gas companies and required that they pay much higher royalties. He told them to leave when they refused. They did.
His image was burnished by Hollywood celebrities who flocked to see the excellent work he was doing– taking cash from the abundant and giving it to the poor. Progressive political leaders from the United States and Europe likewise applauded him extravagantly.
Here’s another rule: When Hollywood celebs visit your nation to praise your leader, you’re in difficulty. When the leader sings on nationwide tv and is praised by Hollywood stars, you’re doomed.
Socialism constantly works in the start, so individuals are deceived … in the beginning. In the case of Venezuela, I suggest that actually: People who could get money out of the country, did.
When Chavez initially ran for President in 1999, he said he would leave in two years if individuals weren’t happy with him. Like Castro, Chavez never had any intention of offering up power. He died in office in 2013, replaced by his vice president, Nicolas Maduro. Maduro is Chavez without the charm or the voice.
