Script:
I’m a Christian, a patriotic American, and a free-market, shrink-the-government conservative– who also happens to be gay.
What I suggest by that is my worths specify me, while my sexual orientation in some cases feels more like– well, a footnote. Literally. I “came out” as gay in a footnote in my book, End of Discussion.
My orientation is just one part of the story when it comes to my political beliefs. It’s not the totality of who I am.
Some unimaginative leftists like to claim that this certifies me as a “self-hating” gay person. Far too typically, individuals are sorted by their gender, or their skin color, or their sexual orientation, or any other immutable attribute that has absolutely nothing to do with values or concepts.
To be candid, in my daily life and work, I invest a lot more time believing and writing about the failures of Obamacare, for instance, than I do about “LGBT problems,” whatever that term may suggest on any provided day.
Much like any conservative, I want taxes low, the military strong, and don’t even get me begun on single payer health care or late-term abortion. I’m a conservative due to the fact that when I think of these issues seriously, I typically end up on the best end of the spectrum. It’s that simple.
Here’s the thing: I totally recognize how fortunate I am to reside in a time and a nation where I can be openly gay and live a normal life. Which’s in large part thanks to the effort of gay rights activists who’ve led the way for people like me– people who had it much harder than I do, and individuals who likely would not share my politics. I am genuinely grateful to them.
It’s a new age now. Why ostracize members of our community who do not toe the left-wing political line? Exit ballot reveals that in the last four general elections, between 14 and 29 percent of LGBT voters pulled the lever for the GOP. That’s a lot of us. Now, does that mean that all of us support every component of the celebration’s platform? Never.
I know that many conservatives, including some here at PragerU, do not see eye-to-eye with me on all of these questions. And yet, here I am– making a PragerU video. Which completely highlights another truly important point: Conservatives are often much more tolerant of dissenting views than those who fancy themselves the torch-carriers of objectivity.
Nope. Cross the left on a hot-button social issue, and you’re out.
You see, some on the left believe that they’re entitled to manage the ideas or votes of specific groups of people– particularly minorities and so-called “victim groups.” For some, it comes down to a cynical computation: Without the overwhelming support of those groups, the Democrats would win really couple of elections.
